The biggest demonstration of loyalty that Sam had in his life was Dean to their father. Sam can't be loyal that way -- he just can't follow orders without having an explanations about it, can't do something if he doesn't know what kind of consequences that can bring, can't just be loyal and blind.

But, if we're talking about love, Sam is probably one of the most loyal person. Even when he had a crush in highschool, he just had eyes for that person, and when he experienced the feeling of being in love for the first time with Jessica, his need to be loyal just increased.

Sam always believed in angels and whenever he'd fight with his father and/or his brother -- almost always, when he was younger -- he believed in that 'story' of the guardian angel.

It wasn't something intimate, he just had to believe that someone was looking out for him although he always felt misplaced. He had to believe that there wasn't just bad in this world, he truly believed that there was something else, something good, that maybe accepted him.

Although everything, Sam always knew that his real 'guardian' is and always will be his big brother. This was something he used to hate so much because it made him feel like a kid, like someone who can't do anything without Dean, and went to Stanford -- also -- to demonstrate the opposite. When his brother and him met again and Sam began to travel with him, he understood that Dean considered protecting him a job and just accepted it for awhile.
