I’m (29M) a serial monogamist and it is affecting my relationship (28F)
I (29M) am with my girlfriend (28F) for three and a half years now. We have a good relationship, we get along well and care each other a lot and are very comfortable together. When we first started going out, I fell in love harder and faster than ever before, and was crazy about her and she felt the same. Now of course, I know these feelings don’t last forever and neither would I expect them too. However it has faded a lot more than I would have expected over these years on my end. We’ve had some issues in our relationship, but it has gotten much better now on both ends and I can confidantly say she is the most loving and caring person I have ever been with. I have never been with anyone this loving, which sucks as I feel like I struggle to give the same amount of love back, which she feels as well. I think my dating history is relevant here. I am a serial monogamist, and have been in long term relationships almost all of my adult life, with maybe a year of being single over all. I really enjoyed those times, and I do tend to look at them with rose tinted goggles. Also thinking about those times makes me restless, and makes me feel like I haven’t had enough time being single. I tend to go through periods where I yearn to be single again, go wild, but eventually these feelings tend to die down a bit, and then come back hard again. I tend to be jealous of all my single friends, and I miss having fun as a single with them. Being in relationships is all I know, and I think a large portion of my self worth stems from them. This is an issue for me, feeling like I haven’t had the chance to really develop by myself and get to know who I am when I’m alone and also get to be comfortable by myself. However, I don’t like hurting people and I love to love, and paradoxically it seems like not confronting these feelings over the years has made it more difficult to love, creating a sort of block on my emotions. I’ve had these feelings in past relationships as well, and I feel like ignoring it and hoping it goes away has only made it worse. I am starting to think that I can’t keep going like this, but also I don’t want to get rid of something good in my life just because of some selfish desire, which I will probably regret. Does anyone have any advice in how I can navigate this, and possibly talk about it with my partner in the least hurtful way possible?
Why don't you start by talking to a therapist about this and working with them to figure out ways to explore and develop your sense of self regardless of whether or not you're in a relationship?
