Three... Guards? Ch 19
Summary: Tifa finds Cloud at the train station in Sector Seven. Itâs the first time sheâs seen him in seven years. But heâs not alone. Three silver haired boys protected him. Three silver haired boys that triggered memories of her hometown. Of steel through her chest. Of SOLDIER First Class. Of Him.
Junon wasn't the same as Strife's world.

Chapter 19: By a Butterfly's Wings in Junon
Not even the Buster Sword could cut the tension in the group as they traveled through the Mythril Mines, a simple intermediate requirement to reaching Junon. The massive Condor flew overhead, blocking the sun for a single moment as it soared through the sky.Â
âWe talk to the locals first. Then we decide who goes where: Northern Continent or Western continent,â Strife explained.Â
âWhy both?â Aerith asked with a tilt of her long swirled braid.Â
âWe have a few friends in the West. We just need to meet them first,â He answered simply. âWe need to reach Gold Saucer, Cosmo Canyon, and Nibelheim.â
âNibelhiem is gone,â Tifa muttered, the slightest tinge of hatred and memory.Â
Aged blond hair shook slowly as he tried to hide the wound at the memory. âShinra rebuilt it as a coverup.âÂ
âThen who could be there?â
Strife shrugged. âYou wonât believe me if I told you. But heâs one of our best alliesâ
âIf you already know them, shouldnât you be the one to recruit them?âÂ
âI donât think I recruited anyone.â
Genesis scoffed. âCertainly not with that attitude."
Their conversation was interrupted by a mindless groan coming from one of many men in tattered black cloaks. The exhausted man only mumbled with slow and staggering steps as he passed.Â
â...and in the North?â Aerith spoke up hesitantly.Â
The silver haired brothers turned away. The smallest gripped Cloudâs hand harder.Â
âSephirothâŚâ Yazoo mumbled before Strife could answer. Thankfully, the group did not hear the child.Â
But Strife pursed his lips and paused. â...Jenova landed in the Northern Crater. Sephiroth learned what he was in Nibelheim. Both locations are important to him. He will return to one of them.âÂ
âHeâs too strong for us, even as a complete group,â Cloud countered.Â
Genesis scoffed. âWell, you might have trouble-â
âThereâs too much at stake,â Strife explained. âWeâll struggle at first, but that wonât stop us by the time we reach our destinations. Especially with all the wild fiends.â
âHow would we get north, big brother?â Loz asked, but the look he received in return made him look away.Â
âIâm still figuring that out,â The wolf glanced at Genesis, âHopefully thereâs a method other than one person transportation.â
The man in red rolled his eyes.Â
âUntil then, the usual,â Barret interrupted, walking ahead of the blonds. âCheck out the local chocobo ranch to see whatâs goinâ on around here.â
Cloud rolled his eyes, unable to think of why talking to a farmer would help them get off the continent. Scanning the land, he noticed a clear ocean, only a single Shinra cargo ship between the shore and the horizon.Â
Something wasnât right.Â
Cloud wasnât sure if it was the result of the post Zormer conflict while he was blacked out, the passing presence of the black cloaks on land, or if something else caused the small chill down his spine.Â
Something pressed against his leg before retracting. Cloud looked down and saw Kadaj with head hung low and an uneasy countenance.Â
âEverything alright?â
The boy met his gaze, but the expression only evolved to concern.Â
âAre you sure?â
Kadaj faintly shook his head, grabbing his own sleeve tightly.Â
Cloud nodded before addressing the team, âStay on guard. Somethingâs up.â
His future self was the first to answer. âIs it Sephiroth?â
âNo, not him. ItâsâŚâ Cloud didnât know.Â
â...wrong,â Aerith finished for him, planet green eyes wide and worried. âJust wrong.âÂ
âPerhaps itâs the mako exhaust in the water,â Genesis offered. âThe underwater reactor usually has leaks.â
Aerith shook her head, the slight breeze swaying her bangs as she looked back across the cliffs.Â
* * *Â
Cloud wasnât sure he could call this Chocobo Ranch a âranchâ with the rocky terrain and minimal vegetation. Clearly reused rollers once used by package transport littered the field on the old tracks. A few skinny chocobos picked at the vegetation while others slept in perfect circles by the roller activation levers. Stone retention walls lined the path between the few buildings. Despite the desolate atmosphere, they heard laughter from the stables.Â
âWell, that makes finding the owner a lot easier!â Barret announced.Â
Strife squinted, scanning the area.Â
âLetâs not waste any time, then,â Tifa suggested.Â
Cloud and by extension Kadaj were the first to open the door to the stables, the smell just as overwhelming as the ranch in the Grasslands.Â
âCan we bathe Clara next?â Came the voice of a little girl.Â
âOf course, Angela. Sheâs your favorite!â Followed the joyous sound of an older man.Â
It felt too kind of a moment to interrupt with questions about Shinra and the obvious impacts to the land.Â
âHey!â Someone called from behind the group, suddenly a woman behind the sales stand. âSorry for the wait. What brings yâall here today? Lookinâ for anything specific?â
âHello, lovely lady,â Genesis immediately claimed the conversation. âWe have no specific items in mind, but we are certainly looking for something.â
âTry me.â She taunted as she fixed her baseball cap.Â
âMy friends and I are new to the area. Just passing through. Are there any odd jobs you need done in the meantime?âÂ
âWell,â She rocked her head from side to side. âDepends on what yâall are willinâ to do.â
Barret interrupted, âWeâre at least gonna need a few Chocobos. Five barely worked last time. Iâm not tryinâ to knock anyone off this time, ya know?âÂ
She thought for a moment. â...We only have four available for rent right now. Weâll have to ask you to find our rebellious group and bring them back.â
A muttered groan came from Strife, followed by the question âwhy does this keep happeningâ.
âBut even thenâŚâ She seemed regretful, counting seven adults, âthere wonât be enough without Clara.â
âIs she not for rent?â Barret asked.Â
The woman took an exhausted breath. âNormally, she would beâŚâ she turned away, curled and protective. âDo yâall in the city have⌠ghostsâŚ?â
The team glanced at each other.Â
âYeah, we have ghosts,â Aerith answered simply. âThey haunt the old train graveyard.â
âOkay, but are they like, ânormalâ ghostsâŚ?â She gestured oddly. âFlowy write robes, closer to a sheet costume than a human?â
Aerith shrugged. âI think so. Right, Tifa?â
âYeah. They were flowy.âÂ
The woman shook her head. âItâs different then. Damn itâŚâÂ
âWhat are you talking about?â Cloud chimed in.Â
She only pointed to the barn. âIf you can convince my father to rent you Clara, Iâll explain.âÂ
Strife muttered tiredly, âWhy do people always want thingsâŚ?â
âIâll talk to him,â Barret stepped in. âOne father to another.âÂ
The store owner didnât say a word and simply closed up shop, returning to the small home.Â
After sharing a few shrugs, Barret led the way to the barn, opening the door before announcing himself, âNow where might someone rent a chocobo around here?âÂ
The team heard an exchange of âhold on, sweetie,â before an older bald man stood at the entrance to the last stall, clothing worn from years of hard work. âYou came to the right place, but all rentals should be made with my daughter at the store.âÂ
âShe sent us here,â Cloud explained.Â
âWe need seven. She said somethinâ about not having enough?â
The old man looked back at the stable before speaking to the group. â...Yâall can take six.â
A little voice came, high in pitch and terribly innocent. âDad, itâs okay,â
His voice was kinder as he turned into the stable. âBut she just got to see you againâŚâÂ
âBut she loves to explore! Sheâll be back and Iâll be here.â
There was a pause before the owner shouted, âYou still have to find the others!âÂ
âGot any clue where they are?â Barret responded.Â
âOut by the abandoned mine carts to the west. Reach Junon proper and youâve gone too far.â
âWeâll get them once we clear up whatâs going on here,â Strife interrupted. âWe heard you might have a âghostâ problem-â
âThereâs no problem here,â came the instant, cold reply.Â
Strife scanned ahead and walked forward. Someone on his team grabbed his arm.Â
Aerith. Of course it was Aerith. âMaybe itâs best to leave this be?â
His hard scowl made her hesitate and surrender despite the pain it caused him.
âTake another step closer and yâall are gettinâ NONE of our birds!â
Barret stood in the way. âStrife, just stand down before you screw this up for all of us.â
Cloudâs voice broke through the air, âSomethingâs wrong.â The same phrase as before as the child at his side gripped him tightly.Â
That simple sentence seemed more than enough permission for Strife to walk forward despite the groupâs protest.Â
The rancher rapidly looked around but clearly saw no escape. He held up his hands, and odd black bruises leaking puss revealed themselves on his wrists and forearms as the sleeve slid down. âLook buddy, itâs not what you think.âÂ
Strife drew his sword and the old man ran into the stable. The wolfâs hands were shaking when Barret and Genesis pulled him back.Â
âCalm down, Strife!â
The blond man turned away from the rancher and out of their grips. The rage in his eyes made Cloud block the smallest remnant. Without breaking a step, he grabbed the remaining two remnants and dragged them out of the building.Â
âWhat happenedâŚ?!â
âBig brother, wait!â
He ignored their pleas and the attacks on his back from the team. He pulled them into the empty hills of Junon. âWas this your plan?â
He felt the fire balls deflected by his blades as the kids looked for support at each other but found none.Â
âLast warning!â Cloud demanded. âLet them go!â
Strife lifted them to their feet but did not release either child. âThey look innocent. Theyâre not. They released geostigma.â
The tallest boy yelled in absolute confusion, âMotherâs invitation!?â
The middle boy shook his head in denial and shock. âThatâs not possibleâŚâ
The smallest turned away.Â
âExplain. Instead of hiding it from us. But if you lay another hand on them, weâre leaving this continent without you.â
Strife glared. âGeostigma is a disease that didnât exist in my world-â
âYour Zormer didnât catch up to the chocobos. Your world is different-â
âNot this different.â
âBullshit.â
âSephiroth didnât have either the power or the motive to do this.â Strife stated seriously. âGeostigma is the disease that he made in order to weaken the Planet and humanity.â
âMaybe you brought it here!â Cloud countered.Â
Strife winced but stood his ground. âI couldnât spread it to Junon even if I did.â
Tifa placed a hand on Cloudâs shoulder, finally catching up. âCloud, heâs you. You wouldnât do this without a reason.â
Cloud glanced away from her large crimson eyes.Â
Strife adjusted his grip and growled at the children. âWhat did you do?â
âNothing! Honestly!â
Yazoo rapidly searched for an answer, a difference, some event that could trigger the invitation early. â...MotherâŚâÂ
Both Loz and Kadaj suddenly locked onto the middle brother.Â
âMotherâs dead here⌠Gone⌠Could that cause something newâŚ?â
Strife glanced at Aerith for confirmation, but he saw the look in her eyes.Â
She remembered something, even if Strife wasnât there to see it. Aerith saw Jenovaâs black Lifestream flow from the charred body down to the vulnerable planet.Â
Strife targeted Kadaj, but the youngest was protected by his past self.
Kadaj shook his head, further hiding behind the SOLDIER uniform.Â
âYou caused this.âÂ
Cloud drew the buster sword at Kadajâs defense. âHeâs not working with Sephiroth. It doesnât matter who caused it. How do we fix it?â
Strife clenched his own sleeve, consciously covering his arm. â...I donât know.â
