Roughly how mature should dreads be before they're wrapped?
Hey there :)The reason you may not want to decorate dreads right away is because wraps will hold the hair together and block it from moving and therefore prevent it from locking up and forming knots like the unwrapped hair will be doing. Beads etc. will also create weak spots where they sit because the hair underneath them is most likely not dreading. That being said, you CAN decorate the day you start your dreads. The key is not leaving anything on them long term. If you have the patience to take the beads out every day that would be ideal and moving them around so they're in different spots in different dreads will prevent the formation of weak spots (every day may not be practical but the point is that you need to be moving the beads around a lot even if it's just up and down the same dreadlock and moving them once a week at the very very least). Another thing you need to look out for is the beads getting stuck on. As my dreads matured they got thicker and I have a bead stuck at the bottom of one of my dreads because of it! But again, moving the beads often should prevent this.Wraps are slightly more difficult because it is not at all practical to move and redo wraps everyday. I would put off wrapping them as long as possible but in the end the same rules apply even if you want to wrap your dreads early on. Don't leave the wraps on for more than a week and don't always put them in the same dreads on the same spots. If you're leaving a wrap on for a week you may notice that area being not as knotted as the rest of the hair right after taking the wrap out but as long as it's not left on for weeks none of that is really going to be long term, the hair will continue knotting and catch up or blend in with the rest of the dreads soon enough. So, waiting to put beads in until the dreads are mature is recommended but as long as you're careful and diligent about putting very temporary stuff in young dreads should cause little to no adverse effects. It all depends on the hair type, and everyone's dreads mature differently and at different rates.Good luck!

knottysleeves said: +1 for moving beads regularly to prevent weak spots. I tell my dread sleeve customers w/ baby dreads to remove the sleeves before washing & not put them back on until their dreads are totally dry. Washing is when a lot of the tangling happens!
