Xeon knew he wasn’t supposed to be down here.
Practicing in the closest morgue had been a stupid idea, he realised as he paused in front of the drawers. What if he got someone who’d been dead too long? Or who was pissed he woke them up? It had happened before, after all.
He looked around, peering into the dark corners of the room. Between his fear of the dark and his fear of being caught, the dark had originally seemed like the lesser of two evils. He was doubting that choice now. He turned back to open the drawer, looking around again as the metal creaked.
Nothing moved, so he turned back to the girl on the slab in front of him, not much younger than he was. He cupped his hands and was waiting for the familiar ball of light to appear when he heard footsteps. Forgetting all about practice, he dived to hide under a table, holding his breath.
