With a soft smile, she placed the cup of tea on the table, along with a small tray with sugar, honey, cream... and a bottle of Jameson whiskey.

Intuition was a hell of a thing—amazing, life-saving. And it was also an annoying fucker. Frustrating at its best, and maddening at its worst. Andy definitely felt the latter. A vision here, a gut feeling there, and weird dreams all around but nothing to give it substance. Just a few images and a name and a place didn’t stretch very far.

Andy and this Maya person would just have to figure it out. 

But first, she needed to find her. A name and a place, but not a face? What was she supposed to do? Go around asking “Hey, is your name Maya?” until she hit the jackpot?

Well, it couldn’t hurt, could it? People would look at her weirdly or curse her out, so what? Direct, to the point... it was a no-brainer.

Asking is just what Andy did, picking out the closest person to her. “Are you Maya?”

     For a weekday evening, Embers & Ashes was pretty slow. Well, completely dead might’ve been more accurate. It had been forty-five minutes since the last customer and Andy contemplated closing up early. It wouldn’t hurt any to do so, but that tight feeling in her stomach warned her not to—and she knew better than to ignore any intuition. So the magic shop remained open and the witch waited.

     Soft rock music played from the old CD player behind the glass counter. She stood close by, hips swaying back and forth to the beat. She occupied herself with inventory records, one of the more boring tasks of shop management. When the bell above the door chimed, she muttered “Finally” and pushed the papers away from her.

"Ha, yeah," she said, her laugh throaty. It honestly wasn't the first time Andy had heard that. "I'm great at not being what people expect," she went on, vague amusement in her voice and a little smile to match.

She took a long second to take him in, her eyebrows lifting as she looked him over.

Hmm. Not bad at all.

Andy's smile grew a bit and she shrugged. "I'm not your average witch," she answered, hand on her hip, hardly modest.

With a toss of her red hair, Andy did her best to ignore him. "Just pretend he's not even there," she said to her customer.

"Ha!" The soultaker interjected, grinning broadly. He hopped up to sit on the counter, pushing aside Embers & Ashes merchandise as he did. Oh, he loved getting under her skin... the customer's too, if he could manage it. "You can try."

It was late in the afternoon, one of the slower days at Embers & Ashes. Andy was again considering closing an hour early so she could head to the grocery store for more cat food for the beasts waiting on her at home. The radio behind the counter had its volume up, Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" playing. Andy sang along as she went for the broom for a final sweep up.

Oh, should probably turn the sign around, she thought. She brought up her hand to telekinetically do so, when she saw Ayesha step in through the door, bells ringing merrily.

"Hey, you. Wasn't expecting you today." They had a tentative schedule now, where Andy worked with her on controlling her abilities. "Or did I forget?" Either way, the sign flipped over and the door locked. She turned down the radio. Embers & Ashes was officially closed for the day.

Then she saw Ayesha carried something and it smelled heavenly. Immediately, Andy's smile grew wider. "Did you bring me a food present?"

"Here—let me see."

Andy's voice was soft, but her touch softer as she took the injured hand. The sight of blood usually gave her a bit of pause, but she could ignore it when necessary as she did now.
