Of course Thranduil and Bard need their wifes and there will never be a love as deep and real as the love for the mothers of their children. And they will miss them forever and grief forever. But they are gone, the fathers are alone with their children and the grief and pain. May be they are reaching out for comfort, for somebody who can understand, for somebody who is not related to the memory of their wifes.
