stern vs. abusive teachers in ballet.
this will mention abuse and ed, if that´s not something you are willing to hear about, don´t read this.
i´ve been in ballet for many years, and i have learned from all sorts of teachers. some teachers were kind, some were stern and some were mean.
the healthiest balance is to be stern but fair. if your student needs a push to be better, push them! just don´t be an asshole.
i have been noticing a sort of dangerous thinking on tiktok, especially the ballet side that romanticizes the abusive techniques of russian schools. i have been to a vaganova school, it´s not fun. it´s not very motivating. i tsrated enjoying ballet agains when i took classes at a different dance school.
they measure girls to the same weight index, not taking into account that there are different body types. there are still schools that hit children with canes. they will yell and scream at you, call you a pig for the simple sin of eating bread. i lost my love for ballet to this way of teaching. it took me years to love my ballet shoes again.
this side of social media has confused stern with abusive. i have met stern teachers, they give you tough love but they will always have your safety at heart. abusive teachers don´t care. they want your clean lines, they want the arch, they want you to weigh under 50 kg so that boys won't injure themselves during partner class.
i do not wish to diminish the talent of the girls under the russian schools, but i do hope that people will begin taking into account the serious abuse these girls undergo in their classes.
