He took Theo to the park, the two of them lying on a towel on the grass, Theo’s head resting on Josh’s belly, just enjoying himself while Josh stroked his soft, shiny fur. The two lay under the mild sun, Josh observing the fluffy clouds in abstract shapes. Josh was completely happy and fulfilled.

“Are you happy, Theo?” he asked. Obviously, he wasn’t expecting any answer from the animal, but it stroked Josh’s belly and chest as if asking for affection and attention and he bit Josh’s index finger lightly, without actually hurting him. Josh knew what this meant.

“Good. Your happiness is important to me. I’m happy, too.”

Every time Josh ran in the woods, he always felt like he could be attacked by some vicious animal, as was always on the news—and quite often—and die. And yes, he continued to go for a run every day, in the late afternoon, as sunset approached, to avoid sunburn. Even with the potential danger.

In fact, he didn’t even like jogging; he’d only started doing it because his therapist suggested it, as a form of distraction and to improve his health, something Josh was trying to prioritize. After a year and a half of rehab, months of working on his mental health and self-esteem, he wasn’t planning on falling back into his old ways. He didn’t want to go back to Donovan and his stupid and dumb friends, the loud, wild nights, the hard drugs, and the sneaky drinking at work, all those guys, now just blurred faces lost among his messy memories.
