The client for the story, Neil Gibson, is a very despicable person, and has some opinions about women and their "passions". I genuinely couldn't tell if this was Doyle being of his time, or if he did it deliberately to make the client unlikable. Although another character later refers to a Brazilian woman as having a "tropical nature" so it's probably Doyle's sensibilities.

Also in the story Holmes places his hands on Watson's knees which is very heterosexual of him.

I think this is a very good case with some caveats. The treatment of Brazilian people through the victim of this case does not shed a kind light on Doyle's beliefs, and there is some pervasive sexism within. In my mind, the case becomes easier to read if the traits ascribed to a people as a whole are ascribed singularly to the people who bear them and are merely representatives thereof.
