Danny spent three glorious days playing through a video he hadnât made time for yet, eating too much take out, and barely leaving his closet of a room. It was nice. While the break from all of the medical tests was easily the best part, it was also good to have a break from people. People worrying, people telling him off for being reckless, people caring evenâDanny needed some time with just himself and his own thoughts.
Danny needed time coming to terms with the effects the event had on his body.
The hearing aids werenât that bad, actually. He had a feeling that maybe that was because theyâd been provided by the Justice League, but once heâd gotten used to having them in, they werenât bad. It was even nice when riding the subway to be able to turn off the aid part, cut out some of the people noise, and use them as headphones. He was almost used to putting them in every morning too.
The tremor in his limbs was harder to get used to. Mostly it was when he was tired, though, and the better he got the less he got. Heâd been warned that it would likely never go way, though, even after he finished the occupational therapy he had started. Heâd just⊠have to meter his time a little more. He did that already with his chronic aches. He could manage.
He just needed the seizures to stay away.
(So far so good.)
Besides the mess that was his corporeal form, Danny also needed time coming to terms with the fact that he was apparently dating two people.
It was nothing to do with Wally and Dickânot exactly. They were both wonderful people and Danny would feel lucky to date just one of them. But Wally had fallen for Danny when he was isolated, in danger, and desperate. Dick had agreed to the arrangement when saying anything to Wally must have been a relief. And Danny had said yes while his life was not so slowly bleeding away to keep Wally there.
It wasnât exactly the healthiest basis to form a relationship on.
Danny had wanted to take some time away from Dick and Wally to center himself and evaluate. What he found was that he missed them. He missed their easy, back-and-forth chatter. He missed how tactile they both were. He missed how they listened to him, even if what he was saying wasnât important.
He missed them.
After a bit of hunting, Danny found his phone (under several pillows), and pressed dial. He hummed as he waited. When the call was picked up, he couldnât help the grin that broke out. âHey, Wally. How about that date you two owe me?â

Danny turned Clockworkâs medallion over in his hands. Heâd taken it out again for the MRI. He didnât know if things inside of his ghost body could react to the giant magnet, but he hadnât wanted to find out be destroying a very expensive medical device.
The design was slightly warped now, like it had been melted on the one side, and the once bright gold was tarnished. Danny was pretty sure that the tarnish was from his blood and ectoplasm.
Fourth time dying and still not the charm.
Which Danny was damn glad for, of course, but it was still his fourth time dying. Fifth, if alternate timelines counted.
âYouâre thinking too hard,â Mina said as she set down the tray of tea.
Danny eyed it.
âItâs just normal tea,â Mina assured him with a little huff. âEarly grey, to be specific. You like it with honey and milk.â
Danny smiled slightly. âI do. And thank you for having me over for it. I needed to just not⊠be busy with tests and people worrying and⊠just not there. Does that make me horrible?â
âOf course not!â Mine said. She set the honey pot down a bit forcefully. âDanny, youâve been away from home for weeks and weeks now. You had to drop out of your classes this semester. I know thereâs probably a new job or two you missed. Itâs totally understandable that you need a break from that.â
âOkay, okay good,â Danny sighed. âI was just worried? I mean, Iâve basically been doted on by my boyfriends for weeks now, that should be good.â
âBoyfriends who you started dating under extreme stress.â Mina passed Danny his cup and a hard look at the same time. âBesides, youâre not Penny, you donât fall for someone and become inseparable. You still need your own space.â
âTheyâre both so cuddly, Mina,â Danny whined. âAnd I love it! But also sometimes I just need a little bit of space.â
âYouâre allowed to be overwhelmed, especially after dying.â
âAgain,â Danny added.
âAgain,â Mina agreed. âSince youâre half ghost! And never told me!â
âOddly, does not come up much in normal conversation,â Danny said.
âAs if weâre normal,â Mina pointed out.
âNever,â Danny agreed. He took a long sip of the tea. It was good, even if maybe he had tea trauma. âBut I could maybe use a little bit of normalcy.â
âGo back to your own place,â Mina said, âget used to your hearing aids, and take some time to breathe. Read a book or something.â
Danny arched his brow over a pointed sip of his tea.
Mina rolled her eyes. âOkay, fine, play a video game. Point is, relax and just let yourself recenter. Iâll send you home with a crystal.â
âYou know those donât do anything,â Danny pointed out.
âYeah, but theyâre pretty,â Mina said with a little sigh.
Chuckling, Danny shook his head. âOkay, fine. But before I go to find my zen or whatever, tell me about the latest fortune telling drama.â
Mina leaned forward with an eager smile that promised a good story. âOh my gods, Danny, youâre going to love thisâŠâ
âAnd look up,â the doctor instructed before pulling away the pen light.
Danny blinked back the after images that it left. The eye exam certainly didnât help, but the overwhelming feeling of seeing was better. Everything was still on the blurry sideâtoo soft, too bright, too whiteâbut it didnât make Danny want to hide from the world anymore.
âWell, the good news is, your eyes are dilating and have no issue with movement. Theyâre just far too dilated. Weâll need to get you to an ophthalmologist to be sure, but I suspect that your vision will return to normal as the side effects of the event fade.â
ââkay,â Danny rasped. He took a grateful sip from the cup Wally passed him before he tried to continue, âSame on the hearing, orâŠ?â
Danny didnât much like the way the doctor frowned.
âIt could be,â the doctor said. It was clear the effort she was putting in to speak loudly and articulately enough, âbut hearing doesnât bounce back the way eyes can. I think it would be good to at least be braced for bad news. The good news, even if itâs bad news, is that you seem to still have some hearing in both ears, so you should be a good candidate for hearing aids.â
Danny rubbed at his face with a shaky hand. âRight. Thank you. What do we think about the hand tremors?â
âAnother wait and see. But weâll start you on some physical and occupational therapy. You and the Flash can be be PT buddies,â the doctor said with a little smile. She really was doing her best. âI also want everyone to watch for signs of seizures, especially more minor ones. Like a lot of the cases here, youâre a one off, but that doesnât mean that we wonât do everything that we can to take care of you.â
âThanks, really,â Danny said. âI think Iâm just here for right now, so whatever works for those appointments? You can let Nightwing know when they are if Iâve crashed again or not remembering or something.â
âThe memory issues should go away as you stay awake and get oriented, but Iâll make sure that Nightwing knows of all appointments also. I know itâs easy to lose track of time when youâre healing.â The doctor stood and rolled her gloves off. âMake sure to eat and hydrate while youâre awake, but rest when you need and keep the oxygen in when youâre resting. Flashâstay put and keep that IV in.â
âYes maâam!â Wally chirped as Dick showed her out.
Wally hooked his chin over Dannyâs shoulder and pulled him back against his chest. Danny let himself slump back into the hold with a sigh. He found the straw to sip at just so that he didnât have to say anything right away.
âAlright!â Dick said with a clap of his hands. âFood! As long as Wally drinks his smoothies and stays on that IV, weâre not on a restrictive diet, so Danny, what are you thinking?â
âTrash,â Danny decided. âNuggets and fries and like a shake or something. Just salty trash.â
âDeal! Shake flavor and dipping sauce?â
âStrawberry I guess and like, honey mustard? Honey something. Surprise me.â
âCan do,â Dick said complete with a little salute. âIâm going to to let the others know youâre awake awake and get their food order too, okay? But Iâll keep the horde away for now.â
âThanks,â Danny said with a grateful smile. He liked the all the Titans, but he really just couldnât right then, not with his senses all off. Two was just enough. After Dick left, Danny leaned a little more firmly against Wally. âNice to be able to finally touch you.â
Wally said something then cleared his throat and said more clearly, âYeah?â
âYeah.â
âEven though⊠just⊠some of those things might be permanent,â Wally said, voice almost dipping too long a few times.
âYeah,â Danny sighed. âI really hope the vision isnât. Iâd like the tremors not to be too, you know? And the seizures would suck if theyâre as bad, but I bet thereâd be medication for that at least.â
When Wally sighed, it was with his whole body. âYouâre so calm about it. IâDanny, you got hurt bringing me back, maybe for good. That⊠doesnât that make you mad?â
Danny played with Wallyâs fingers as he thought about how to answer that. âYouâve had to have been hurt as Flash.â
âI heal fast,â Wally pouted.
âOkay, lucky guy,â Danny said with a little snort. âBut you have or Dick has. You know itâs part of being a hero.â
âYouâre a civi right now. Youâre a civi and Iâm not. I know that even heroes can need rescuing, but you shouldnât have been hurt because I fucked up!â
Ah, that was it.
Danny brought up Wallyâs fingers and kissed them lightly. âEveryone fucks up. And part of me will always be that stupid teen who was a hero. Iâll deal with what this got me just like I deal with the aches and pains I already have. I donât blame you.â
âYou should.â
âI donât,â Danny insisted. âAnd you have to respect me enough to know that I went into this willingly and with open eyes. If you canât do that, then our date when weâre free from here needs to be a friendly dinner instead. Iâm not going to be with someone who doesnât respect my right to decide.â
Wally left out a huff of air like he was deflating. âSorry. I didnât mean too⊠just⊠hero guilt.â
âI get it, really I do,â Danny said. âBut shove it aside, okay? Because both of us are here and alive and I think thatâs a damn good outcome when dealing with unknowable forces of the space time continuum.â
âNerd,â Wally teased.
âOh like you arenât.â
âNo, I totally am,â Wally said, âbut now I have someone to curl up and watch Star Trek with. I love Dick, but heâs an absolute pop culture heathen. He swings between cartoons and reality tv.â
Danny held back a laugh and nodded wisely instead. âWell, weâll put on âThe Voyage Homeâ, and he can fall asleep to the dulcet whale songs.â
âPerfect, as soon as you can hear better,â Wally promised with a soft kiss to Dannyâs temple.
I'll have to go through your writing again, to make sure I didn't forget anything (delightful task to be honest), but I have weird realization, that Danny dies more often in your stories with Wally, than he does in other stories. And like, sure it's Danny, he always dies at some point, but like, on page.
With Danny/Wally(and Dick, sometimes), we have Haunting, that I'll count for one, for ease sake, and Broken Sort of Normal, which makes it 2 out of 3 (and thirds is pwp lol).
On everything else we have Like Beta Fish Do and... I think Not So Imaginary could count? In Shadow of the Bat, the experimentation could definitely be counted as death, but it's also set before the story started.
Clock, with all due respect, why do you love to make Wally witness his boyfriend's death so much?
I--
*thinks*
*ponders*
...okay, you might have a point. Only Like Betta Fish Do is also on screen. Woops?
In my meager defense, I'm going to blame Wally's lightning connection. It just makes it too easy. Maybe I'll be nice some day and make Danny a lightning core and everyone thinks he's a weird Speedster what with Clockwork's influence.
(Also maybe, maybe, Wally is such a sweet golden retriever of a boy that he's easy to kick.)

First of all, I loved the new haunting update. Poor baby Danny, I was wondering what was going to be the toll bringing Wally back took on him. Also was Wally and/or Dick cuddling with Danny when he was going in and out of it, or was I misreading?
The very start was the end of bringing Wally back! So Wally had to hold onto the medallion even if all he wanted to do was help Danny.
Once Danny is awake, yep, Wally is cuddling Danny. It helps keep Wally still and healing to have someone to cuddle lol. Dick has been staying close around his duties as leader.
âHow sure of this are we?â Wally asked. His freckles scrunched up adorably when he was worried.
âSure enough for Nightwing to give the okay,â Danny said. âYou know heâs checked with every group at least three times before he even let the big planning start.â
Wally didnât look at all relieved about that.
âFlash, itâs been weeks,â Danny said. He dropped his voice to a soft murmur between them. âWe need to do this now, Walls, before I canât anymore.â
Wally rubbed at his arm and glanced away. âI donât want to be why you die.â
âI was dead before you knew me, time boy,â Danny teased. âTrust your team to bring me back.â
Wally gave a wet sounding chuckle. âYouâre never afraid, are you?â
âPlenty, but not about death, Iâve walked with it too long,â Danny said. âSo no tears for me, okay? Start planning our date instead. You have a lot of catching up to do.â
âI still canât believe he got to kiss you first.â
âYou get stuck in the timeline, you lose,â Danny said. âNow are you ready? You canât hesitate.â
Wally searched Dannyâs gaze for a moment longer before he squared his shoulders and nodded. âReady.â
Danny turned and gave two thumbs up towards the observation room.
A moment later, Dickâs voice rang out over the comms. âWeâre go then. Danny, time to show us Phantom.â
Danny backed up from Wally, hands held out to his side. âCover your eyes!â
The world went white, then dark, and then was washed faintly in green as it always was as Phantom. Wally stood out like a beacon, as if glowing under black light. Danny drifted up and around him in a circle. âWell, that is fascinatingâŠâ
âWhat is?â Nightwing asked.
âWhat? Oh, sorry. Flash is practically glowing for me,â Danny said. He pushed off the ground so he could hover at the same height as the observation room. âAs is the other Flash, though not as bright. Best as we ever figured, I see things different as a ghost, like how insects see in infrared or all the mantis shrimp craziness. I think Iâm seeing an effect from their timey wimey stuff.â
âTimey wimey stuff,â Constantine muttered.
Danny just smiled serenely back. âRaven, Constantine, and Zatanna have a glow too, but in different ways. Thatâs expected with them being magic users. Ghosts and magic arenât that far apart and there are ghosts who actively use it. But that the Flashes having the effect, well, I think that just reinforces the theory that weâre going with.â
âGood, because if it went against it, I would be calling this,â Nightwing said.
Danny laughed, aware how the sound echoed on itself and swooped over to the window. âCalm, Nightwing. The plan is solid.â
âThereâs still a high risk of death for you.â
âThatâs the wonder of it, Iâm already dead,â Danny said with a fanged grin. âAny issues with the readings or calculations?â
âEverything looks good,â Barry!Flash answered. âYour transformation hasnât cause any issues with the readings. Weâre still locked on to Flash.â
Danny nodded and floated back just a little from the window before he dug around in his chest for the medallion. He ignored the noises and reactions he got for reaching into himself like that. It was convenient. Besides, without it they would have never found Wally.
âThat caused a spike,â Barry!Flash said, voice a little tight. âGive us ten to adjust.â
âMore support to the theory though,â Danny said, mostly for Nightwingâs benefit.
âWhat all do you keep in there?â Nightwing asked with a little tilt of his head.
Danny placed his hands over his heart. âAw, Nightwing, thatâs third date sort of information.â
âGhosts,â Constantine muttered.
âOh, like you can talk, laughing magician,â Danny said with a more vicious baring of his fangs.
âGentlemen,â Batman admonished.
âBut to give a real answer,â Danny said to avoid picking a fight reight before he (probably died again, âthings I always want on me like the medallion or things I only need as a being of the Infinite Realms. I have a phone that works over there, for example. It was more of a thing when I was an active hero.â
âOkay, Phantom, can you move around with the medallion?â Barry!Flash asked. âI want to make sure that weâre tracking it right.â
âSure thing, boss,â Danny said. He made some slow, easy loops of the room, making sure to change elevation as well.
âAlright, stage two,â Nightwing said. âFlash, remember you have to hold the medallion with both hands. Grab it quickly and tightly. Donât let go until youâre given the all clear.â
âUnderstood,â Wally said seriously as Danny landed lightly in front of him.
âTake a breath,â Danny said. âIt will be alright. We have to believe that.â
Wally did as he was told, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. âRight.â
Danny held the medallion out, gripped tightly in both of his hands. Wally took another breath before he reached out and grasped the medallion just like he had been told.
The world light up with lighteningâbrighter than it ever was as Phantom. Bright as it had been when Danny had died in the portal. And died again.
materpost (no edting/concrit pls. did you know 8+ moderate-sever migraines in a month are too many? ă( â, â )ă)
âOh, youâre a real freak of nature, arenât ya?â Constantine said as he looked Danny over.
Danny grinned at Constantine like a wolf grins before it rips somethingâs throat out. âYep.â
The weird thing was, Constantine actually looked a little afraid. âThey know what you are?â
âOkay,â Dick said as he moved between the two. He wasnât afraid to push either of them back a little. âYes, we know that Danny is a half ghost, but thatâs not actually the important part here.â
Constantine blinked at Dick. âSay what, bruv?â
âI know, we had it backwards at first ourselves,â Dick said. âBut if everyone will just sit down for a moment, we can talk through it.â
Constantine looked like he was actually going to argue before he took the chair next to Zatanna with an exaggerated huff. Bruce, whoâd of course been standing off to the side, swept over to a seat himself. It was the signal that everyone else needed to sit. Dick took the head of the table with Danny nervously to one side and Wally flanking the other.
âAs the Justice League knows, our Flash disappeared while on a solo investigative mission a little over three months ago. Initial investigations by both the Titans and the Justice League found nothing. During that time, the Flash managed to make contact with Danny Fenton,â Dick explained with a little motion towards Danny.
Danny rubbed at the back of his neck. âAs Nightwing said, Iâm Danny Fenton. For a few years as a teen, I was a local hero known as Phantom in Amity Park. The usual lab accident origin story gave me my powers. Iâm half ghost. Itâs along story and not actually important. Mostly these days Iâm just a psychopomp; sometimes I get visited by ghosts and I make sure they move on.
âI assume thatâs what Flash was once he showed up, but he also felt wrong right away. He also caused seizures if he touched me, which wasnât great. That had me reaching out to Miss Wilhelmina Aleshire. Sheâs a local oracle and friend I made through the pyschopomp mess. After trying a tea she gave me, I was able to make clearer contact with Flash. He gave me a message to take to Titan Tower.â
âAnd caused a heart attack,â Wally said, guilt heavy in his voice.
Danny just shrugged. âNot the first time my heartâs stopped. Anyways, once I was awake I checked myself out of the hospital, came here with the phrase, and got in contact with the Titans.â
âThey called me in,â Barry picked up, âand we worked on using Dannyâs connection as an anchor to isolate Flashâs reading. Main players were Danny, Raven, and myself. Obviously once we got Flash to the point that we could see and hear him, he helped also.â
âObviously, not dead,â Wally said. âIâm trapped in the Speed Force. Unfortunately, my existing and using Danny as an anchor is continuing to cause health issues.â
âWhich is fine,â Danny said with a little glare, âbut when we got the signal as clear as it seemed to get, meant rethinking things. Itâs when I realized that Iâm not able to see Flash and serving as his anchor because of being a psychopomp. Heâs right, he isnât dead. One of my⊠mentors in the Infinite Realms is a being known currently as Clockwork. Heâs basically a god of time. We call them Ancients there. Heâs been pretty determined to take me under his wing. There might be some powers at play, but Iâm certain that the bigger reason that Iâm able to be Flashâs anchor is because I have a medallion of time as part of my being.â
âWow, more of a freak than I thought,â Constantine said, squinting at Danny.
âSays the man with mince meat for a soul,â Danny snapped back.
âI can slap him for you, if you want,â Zatanna offered calmly.
Danny smiled sweetly at her. âWould you?â
âOw!â Constantine squawked as Zatanna backhanded him right in the sternum. He rubbed at the spot with a pout. âWeâre teammates, youâre supposed to be on my side.â
âIâm your teammate, but when youâre being an idiot Iâm not on your side,â she said with a viciously pleasant smile.
âAnyways,â Dick interrupted. âBecause we want to make sure that Danny survivesâor at least revives from this processâwe called in you all. Flash and Batman to continue to help us refine the signal isolation machine, Constantine and Zatanna to try and safeguard things from a magical perspective, and MM to keep a track on things mentally. Obviously our Flash, Cyborg, and Raven will continue to help. We have a medical team standing by. Itâs my opinion that we should expect Dannyâs heart to stop.â
âNightwing⊠might be right about that. I seem to have an annoying habit of it,â Danny said with a little shrug.
âHeâs also annoyingly unconcerned about it,â Wally added with a sigh.
âWhat exactly is the plan?â Bruce asked, finally speaking.
Dick gave him a nod. âWe will set up in the reinforced training room and the connecting observation room. Danny will transform into Phantom and remove the medallion. Flash will make contact with both it and Phantom. We believe that while heâs doing so, his signal will become stable enough for us to isolate and lock into this timeline. Luckily, thatâs science that weâve done before for different reasons.â
âWe have to expect a large amount of electrical discharge from that,â Wally added. âWhich wonât effect me, but will Danny.â
âLessened because Iâll be Phantom, but none of me gets along with electricity much. Itâs likely to snap me back into this form which is where the heart stopping might occur,â Danny said.
âSo, as soon as Flash is locked, we need everything can to protect Danny from the effects and then medical in there the second the secondary effects have died down,â Dick stressed. âAnything that we can plan in to help Danny, we need to plan in. Weâre not making an exchange here. I expect both of them to be just as alive at the end of this as they should be. Understood?â
With a course of agreement, the teams split up into magical, medical, and science to brainstorm. There would need to be a lot of cross talk, and some like Raven and MM would jump between a few groups, but it was a place to start. Dick would play leader. At least it was a roll he was well used to.
Bruce slowed his steps to hang back from the science group and walk with Dick. âYou care about him.â
âDanny? Yeah. Wally developed quite a crush on him, which I get. Heâs kind, smart, funnyâlots of things. Weâre going to go on some dates once Wallyâs solid enough to do so,â Dick said. âI donât know if Iâm gone like Wally, Iâve been more focused on getting him back, but thatâs what dating is for, right?â
Bruce hummed in agreement. âBut?â
Dick sighed. âBut he has to survive, and Iâm worried about that. Thereâs also some things that the Titans or the JL need to look into about ghosts. Danny has been through some shit and thatâs with him only alluding to it as he tried to brush it off. I donât know, I just⊠Wally has been isolated for months. Danny has anxiety about being a lab rat and for this to work we have to make him into one. Iâm worried about both of them coming out of this aright.â
âYouâll be there for them,â Bruce said.
âOf course, but will I be enough?â
Bruce was silent for a bit, watching the group in front of them. âMaybe not. But the Titans are there too. As are the Wests. As your family is.â
Dick couldnât help but smile a little. âYeah, you going to explain polyamory to Damian?â
âIâll make Tim do it.â
Dick snorted. âYou just want to make Tim realize his own bullshit.â
Bruce just smiled that Bat smile of his and increased his pace to catch up with the rest of the group.
