Ha ha! The Methodist ethos on justice has had a remarkable influence throughout history. Yesterday I was watching an episode of ‘This Is Pop’ (the episode on music festivals), only to discover that the founder of the iconic Glastonbury Festival was influenced by his Methodist heritage in founding it! #XTC single no. 8: Another simple idea, beautifully executed for this gatefold double-single affair. What really makes it work is the superb execution, with crisp reproduction and ultra-high gloss printing. Love On A Farmboy’s Wages b/w In Loving Memory Of A Name and Desert Island b/w Toys (1983). The first single gives us one each from Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, both among the best songs from Mummer. #XTC single No. 7: File this clever package under “simple yet effective,” as the moiré effect created by the pattern on the bag imitates the flames of the “Great Fire” of the song. No art credit, again! Great Fire b/w Gold (1983). Both Andy Partridge songs and once again the B-side, with its ska-influenced horn arrangement, is better than THAT song on Mummer. #XTC single no. 6: Just a simple and beautiful picture disc this time. Not so common at this size! No art credit. Wonderland b/w Jump (1983). The A side is a Colin Moulding sparkler from Mummer, which is not so well remembered by the critical establishment but is one of their best albums in my estimation. Jump, the sneakily sardonic Andy Partridge B-side, might have been a better fit on the album than Funk Pop A Roll, the slightly naff closing track, however! #thisispop #vinyl #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #seveninchclub #45rpmclub #45rpm #music @showtime

#XTC single No. 4: In the new documentary #thisispop, Andy Partridge talks about how his songs can be like little plays and for this single, he took that to its logical conclusion. The lyrics are even printed as a script. Partridge also did the set design with help from Ken Ansell and the actual visuals are by Art Dragon. Can you blame me for not cutting out the “actors”? No Thugs In Our House b/w Chain Of Command, Limelight and Over Rusty Water. The A-side is a clever way of looking at a social issue - the rise of the National Front - through the prism of one family. Big sweeping chorus, too. Generous as ever, the first two songs on the flip are re-released outtakes from Drums & Wire’s, with Colin Moulding’s Limelight being especially tight and catchy.
