Two birds... On a wire... One says "come on!"... And the other says "I'm tired... The sky's.. overcast, and I'm sorry... One more.. or one less.. nobody's worried..."
The boy stands at the edge of the cliff, watching the clouds under him as the strong winds pull at him, making his clothes and hair whip around him. He doesn't even realize. His friend tries to approach, calling his name over the howling of the cold mountain winds. He turns to look at them, a small smile on his face. He looks calm, satisfied even, like this was just how it was meant to be. He's tired. He's been tired. He just wants to rest. They don't understand that. They try to convince him to come back, to have some warm tea and talk, bundled up in blankets. Just like the good old days. But those days are long gone. It wouldn't be the same.
It's not worth it, they say. They say that there's more to do, more to see, more time to spend. He just shakes his head, smiling softly at his oldest friend.
Don't be scared, he says. You'll be fine, he says. He doesn't understand. They don't want him to go. They won't be the same if he goes. He offers for them to join him, they refuse. He nods, understanding. They always had more to do, more to see, more friends to make. He just couldn't do it anymore. So he nods, taking a step back, closer to the edge, the wind getting louder.
They shake their head. They beg him to come back. Their tears freeze before they even get a chance to fall. They don't want to be alone. They don't want to live without him by their side. He doesn't understand, he just doesn't. He thinks he does, but he's wrong. They aren't complete without him.
He just smiles sadly, taking another step back. He can't do it anymore. He can't do it again. He just wants to rest. He gives one final nod to his friend, a small salute to accompany it, before letting himself fall, content with his decision. No one will miss him, so why does it matter. He's doing something for himself for once. Not for anyone else...
Just him...
