I know it does not matter in the slightest because ao3 does not track or care about these things but every time I get an ao3 fic update email notification (on my phone) and then I go to read the update (on my PC) I specifically open the email on my PC to click the link to the new chapter, rather than pull up my ao3 history or bookmarks. Because I feel the compulsion ingrained in me from working email copy over ten (!!) years ago to let the email sender know I clicked their link. I know ao3 does not have link trackers and therefore it doesn't matter. But the still the senseless desire remains, where I feel like clicking the link lets the ao3 email system know its doing a good job and I loved the link it sent me.
