obviously bioware lied in the dragon age character creation screen when they said there was no gender inequality, but I find it interesting how this "the wardens will recruit anyone" ends up being the same sort of lie within the fiction of the game?

bc sure, the wardens can recruit anyone, but that's not really what we see represented in game (like, right out of the gate, alistair is always surprised if you're not a human man), and I think there's structural reason for that? orzammar dwarves are largely isolationist, and typically pressed to become legionnaires instead. dalish elves are largely isolationist. city elves are often forbidden by law to carry weapons (and like how fucking useless was duncan in the tabris origin anyway "here's a sword, good luck, byeee!") qunari are very rarely seen in southern thedas. mages outside of tevinter are strictly controlled by the circles. that already reduces the pool of most likely candidates to (non-mage) humans and surface dwarves.

we encounter a number of highly trained warriors competing in tournaments for the honor of joining the wardens.

we see repeatedly that the wardens' mandate to do whatever they deem necessary to stop the blight is limited by the caveat: up to and until you piss off the people in charge and they kick your ass the fuck out of their country.

so no it's not a surprise at all to me that the wardens would largely mirror the power structures that surround them, just as a reflection of who is even offered that opportunity to begin with. the wardens don't do pity hires, after all.

whats worse writing every character to be Super Smart Talented Special Genius or like

warping a characters personality to make them good/evil because nuance and just liking/disliking a character without needing a moral reason for it is unfathomable
