I have not had many success stories lately, but I have noticed that when I talk to myself from a third-party standpoint and praise myself, like a supportive friend encouraging a good friend, my self-esteem is so much higher than when I actually succeed! For example, when I didn't succeed, I would say, "XX, you did a great job! That's cool!" then my self-esteem is higher than when I succeeded. Interestingly, the speed at which self-evaluation rises is faster when one does not succeed!
