Yap time The movie is about cultural assimilation, putting your thinking cap for a second makes that clear, and I honestly think making Remmick a good person, was a particularly smart choice, because making him outright a villain could lead to interpretations that go against the point. It's not about what you assimilate into, it's not about a greater majority culture being evil, it's the act of assimilation itself is the death of a culture. Also having Remmick be Irish, a definite victim of that, spouting that he can preserve the culture while also actively in a sense overriding it and killing it, preventing it from evolving and continuing.(imo alot of the turned characters only really speak in lingo of the original culture as a form of signalling, in this case, to get past the front door, and even then they tend to slip into Remmick speech patterns) It also ties back into Sammie, because it is Sammie's story, and it's why he doesn't stay with the church, Remmick is the church, effectively, despite saying that he hates it, he literally does the morning prayer at the end of the movie and "Baptises" Sammie for doing so and Sammie upon the end of the film realising that assimilation is death of a culture, goes his own way, finds his own path, that preserves and grows his culture. Side note: I like that the reverence that is usually reserved for catholics/christianity (which wouldn't make sense in this movie anyway, see above) is wholly shifted onto Hoodoo, it's not downplayed or seen as lesser, Annie is certainly the most competent person in the film and her wisdom is never downplayed by the movie. (Side note: and spoiler, it's almost certainly the mojo pouch that saves Smoke from turning at the end of the movie, as Stack desperately would of wanted Smoke to also be a vampire, so it wasn't brotherly love, similarly, Smoke only dies after he removes the Mojo Pouch accepting his death.) There's also the imagery of the black people being Free in Theory, that technically they are not slaves, they can leave if they want, but the language and imagery makes it clear that they are definitely not free, they still work on cotton plantations, they're paid in company scrip. As a culture, they are still coerced (through both violent and economic means) into suppression. And it's also why club Juke fails, because if they were actually free, like the dominant culture pretends, then they wouldn't of had a chunk of their income in worthless company scrip, which would of removed the incentive to let Remmick in, preventing the Remmick from assimilating any of the characters. anyway this is probably shallow analysis, idk I'm just yapping without structure. It's a really good movie.
