I came across this excerpt from Margaret Powell’s book Below Stairs. She was a kitchen maid who became so weary of her dreadful position that she claimed to be a cook, got a position and stayed up all night devouring Mrs Beeton. She married, escaping service, and finally overcame her feeling of inferiority by taking evening classes. She passed her O-levels at 58 before starting to tackle her A-levels.
I’m thinking about buying the book since it seems such a meaningful insight into the lives of those whose work gave them an ‘inferiority complex’. A woman whose voice should be heard.
