February the 1st. Today, I learnt about another variety of leftover abandoned WWII architecture: Thingplatzen. They were large outdoor theatres - usually extraordinarily massive - in which one would go to see purpose-written plays and performed art. And, you know, propaganda and other gross nationalist bullshit. But, without the Nazi bollocks on top, I’m really really into the idea of making a sacred place in natural surroundings where you can connect with that place through performed art. That’s very hefty, beautiful magic. I am reassured that the Thing movement grew out of the general 1900s urge for new, weird theatre, and that this concept is not particular to Nazis, because that would be excruciatingly upsetting.
You can hunt down and see the remnants of the Thingplatzen on Google Earth, by the way. Some are very ruined and hard to spot; others leave great scars in the landscape. I want to rehabilitate all of them and make them clean and delightful for everyone to enjoy.
