#octoberhorrormoviechallenge 46 & 47: The Unnamable & The Unnamable Returns: The Statement of Randolph Carter A double bill of H.P. Lovecraft adaptations today. Firstly, the Unnamable takes the original, very brief short story, and turns it into… a slasher movie. Just a rather poor “teens being picked off one by one” film, with a demonic monster doing it. Very poorly paced and acted, with this version of Randolph Carter being an utterly unlikeable dick (who is pretty damn flippant about reading from the Necronomicon!). Also, there’s not even a touch of cosmic horror, the monster in this is far too corporeal, seen too often, and we know too much about it by the end for it to be worthy of the title “Unnamable”. Amateurish stuff, the like of which Darkplace expertly made fun of. It was a relative success on VHS though, so it got a sequel a few years later. The Unnamable Returns did try to capture a more authentically Lovecraftian feel in its early stages… before going right back to slasher/monster on the loose shenanigans. It has a few more name actors in here, but it’s very obvious how much they cost the film’s budget given how little they get to do. Also, the main female lead spends a lot of time hanging onto Carter, not saying much, and spends a big portion of time naked. Plus the monster now has visible tits. Yeah. Well, at least neither film included any of Lovecraft’s racist views, so yay for that I guess?
