Dear Detroit, My Hometown: An Open Letter
As one half of BENEFICENT DIGITAL: Home of The Style Tutors, I have had tons of people ask me about our Style Inspirations. Many of these folks are literally serious and curious about finding out where and how our passion for fashion was born. An impressive number of individuals compliment us on our collective eye and overall taste for men’s fashion on a daily basis. Words cannot express the love the support we receive from our loyal friends and followers across social media!
As the principal Stylist here at The Style Tutors, I would be remiss if I didn’t give props to my main inspiration…my hometown, Detroit, MI. I grew up on the West Side. It shaped my identity as a person, both socially and culturally. As a child, I remember places like City Slicker Shoes and Hot Sam’s. These were two of the best spots for men of style to cultivate their look. I grew up going to Northland Mall every other weekend. Layaway was my family’s best friend back then. If we couldn’t get something when we saw it, we had to put at least a lil’ something down on it! Hell, going to Northland Mall was a fashion show in and of itself. Then there was Fairlane Mall in Dearborn. I remember working at Fairlane as a teen. Every pay day you could catch me going from store to store to store. Whether it was was going to Hudson’s, MCM, or EXPRESS(when it had two sides — one for men and the other for women) and/or my personal favorite, Cignal(I can still remember the day I ran into Teddy Riley and Damion Hall of Guy as they were coming out of the store while I was going in to get an outfit for their concert)!
I grew up watching a dance show called, The Scene. That’s where I was introduced to the ever-evolving power that our youth have on fashion and popular culture. It’s how and where I was introduced to Morris Day and The Time, Ready For The World(the show that gave them their big break), the Mary Jane Girls, Troop, Andre Cymone, and Detroit’s very own Techno/House Music legends, Juan Atkins and Derrick May(just to name a few). As a preteen and teen, I made sure my ass was in front of the TV every evening at 6:00 pm. In a completely special and unique way, that show helped shape my city, our fashion and my whole generation.
Although I moved on after college, Detroit is the still the place I call home. All of us have that. No matter where you’re from, you have a place called home. It’s a part of who you are. Detroit is a large part of who I am. The Style Tutors would not exist if it wasn’t for that city in the lower right hand corner on the map of the state of Michigan. The Style Tutors wouldn’t exist without Kingsway, The Bad Boys, Max Julian Coats, The Fab Five, Jingle Boots, Kronk’s Gym, Erroll Flynn, YBI, St. Cecilia’s Gym, Lou’s Deli, Vernor’s Ginger Ale, Belle Isle, Coney Island Restaurants, Greektown, The Jit or the Electrifying Mojo(just to name a few).
My name is Jimmie Malone and I will forever be a proud Detroiter. You can talk about my city. You can put us down. Go ahead and laugh at what our home, our city has become. But if you ask me or anybody else from Detroit how we feel about home, we will all say the same thing, it’s “Detroit Vs. Everybody”…
