LOOKING BACK AT THE OLDER PAGES - ur right, it isn't very visible! which a lot of ppl are critical of the anime bc of ohh it doesn't have the complex stories of the characters. but i just excuse it for this reason! bc the manga was still p new when the anime came out! & i also thiiink that's why knives is portrayed the way he is. just bc  i  do  notice  in  the  earlier  pages,  too...  knives  does  behave  More  like  his  anime  counterpart.  which  you  mentioned  his  design,  but  it  made  me  wonder  if  knives  as  a  character  was  solidified  in  general.  if  nightow  went  back  and  forth  on  wanting  to  make  him  just  Evil,  or  give  him  more  of  a  reasonable  motive  for  what  he  does,  and  also  making  him  feel  more  like  vash’s  brother,  rather  than  just  the  Evil  Twin  trope.  or,  if  him  just  behaving  that  way  is  just  to  fool  the  audience/readers.  probs  the  former  -  given,  i  do  believe  nightow  literally  didn’t  know  fully  what  he  wanted  to  do  with  these  characters,  only  just  that  he  had  the  basic  ideas.  (  vash  doesn’t  kill  bc  of  rem,  wolfwood  dies  eventually,  knives  and  vash’s  beliefs  conflict.  stuff  like  that.  )  and  he  just  fleshed  them  out  as  he  goes  along.  which  isn’t  uncommon  for  manga  authors.  i  used  to  read  a  manga  that  never  updated  bc  it  just  felt  like  the  manga  author  made  up  stuff  as  he  went  along,  and  then  wrote  himself  in  a  hole  and  didn’t  know  how  to  wrap  things  up  /  explain  things.
