Unexpected (2)
Surprise! I just couldnât wait any longer, so Iâm posting this one ahead of schedule. (LOL @ me, trying to use a schedule.)
AUTHORâS NOTE: Here is my entry for @captain-s-rogers Marvel/Friends Challenge! I chose episode 2 from season 8, âThe One With the Red Sweater.â The goal was to use Marvel characters and change one thing, and I think I managed to accomplish that. (Well, kind of. Itâs not EXACTLY like the show, but I think it still works.) WORD COUNT: 3618 WARNINGS FOR THE SERIES: THIS IS AN AU; unplanned pregnancy, language, angst, fluff, sexual content, emotional crap

The One With The Red Sweater
Christine sat at the kitchen table, a mug of steaming coffee in her hand. Pepper stood at the sink, holding her own mug, and they both looked to the door as it opened. Bucky sauntered in, dropping his keys in his pocket, walking to the table and grabbing hold of the back of the chair across from Christine.
âI did it.â
Christine raised her eyebrows and Pepper lifted her mug closer to her face. Bucky glanced from one to the other, then spoke again.
ââDid what,â you may ask? I called the stripper. And guess the fuck what?â
Neither woman said a word and Bucky pulled the chair back, walking and sitting in it.
âThat test ainât hers. Which means I can breathe a sigh of relief, but I can also never go around strippers ever again!â âOh, like you havenât slept your way through NYCâs strippers anyway.â
Bucky pointed at Christine, who rolled her eyes and sipped her coffee. Pepper tilted her head to the side.
âDid you really think she was pregnant like ten minutes after you guys did it?â âI donât know how those things work!â
Christine shook her head.
âDidnât you pay attention in biology class?â âI slept through biology class. The kid behind me would kick my desk if I started to snore. Steve did my homework and I bullshitted my way through the tests.â
Pepper rolled her eyes and sighed.
âWell, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the Barnes name will not be carried on, at least for now.â âNot that we know of, anyway.â âYou hush your mouth.â
Christine giggled, sipping her coffee again, and Bucky nodded to her.
âIs Steve here?â
Christine shook her head.
âHe had an early meeting with one of his students. Somebodyâs failing and wants extra credit now or something.â
Bucky nodded again and they glanced back as the door opened again and you stepped inside, tilting your head when you saw your sister.
âI thought youâd be halfway to Bora Bora by now.â âWell, I would, but âŚâ
Tony stepped into the room, tying the tie around his neck. Pepper nodded towards him.
âIt seems someone forgot that an incredibly important stockholder, shareholder, blah blah whatever was this week. It apparently happens every year at this time, but someone neglected to mention that.â
Tony sighed, slipping his jacket over his shoulders as he walked into the kitchen.
âItâs so bad she refuses to say my name. Iâm someone now. Are youâwhereâs your ring? Weâve been married less than seventy-two hours. Please tell me youâre not leaving me yet.â
Pepper held up her left hand, where two rings glittered in the sunlight shining through the window behind her. Tony gave a sigh of relief, and Pepper set her coffee down, smoothing the lapels of his jacket and fixing his pocket square. Tony watched her, speaking low.
âI promise I will make it up to you.â âOh, I have no doubt about that.â âDo you want an island in the Maldives? Iâll buy you an island in the Maldives.â âIâll add it to the list.â
He leaned in and kissed her, and you smiled as you leaned against the kitchen island. Tony whispered something in Pepperâs ear, and when she leaned in and did the same thing, Tony stepped away, clearing his throat and pointing towards the door. You laughed, handing him the briefcase that was sitting on the island in front of you.
âHave a good day at work, honey.â
Tony winked at you, blowing Pepper a kiss as he walked out the door. She rolled her eyes, then sighed as she looked to you.
âWeâre going in two weeks. Which is fine, because I can get started on the thank you notes and organizing the gifts.â âWhich is better than a honeymoon to you, anyway.â
Pepper narrowed her eyes at you and you smiled, walking to sit between Christine and Bucky at the table. Bucky stood up, heading for the coffee pot.
âY/N, you want a cup?â âNo.â
Your eyes widened at how quickly you answered him, but the smell of the coffee was making your stomach turn. He gave you a look, and you smiled.
âI just ⌠not feeling that great this morning.â
Pepper and Christine exchanged a glance and Bucky smiled.
âPartied too hard last night?â
You thought about the night before, when you sobbed over a Disney movie you happened to find on TV and ate cookie dough out of the tub you kept in the freezer of your mini fridge, which you bought from Buckyâs niece, who sold it for her school fundraiser.
âYep. You got me.â
Bucky smiled, pouring himself a mug and drinking it black. Christine made a face and you let out a shaky breath before looking to Pepper.
âDo you have a Sprite or something? Anything bubbly?â âChampagne?â
Christine rolled her eyes at Bucky.
âFor breakfast?â âEver heard of a mimosa, Palmer?â
Christine waved a hand at him.
âThatâs only okay at brunch.â
You leaned closer to Christine, whispering under your breath.
âCan you please stop talking about food?â âSorry.â
Pepper handed you a small bottle of Sprite and you gave her a grateful smile. Bucky leaned over and twisted the top off for you, and you winked at him as you took a sip, wrinkling your nose at the bubbles. Pepper walked to one of the cabinets, pulling out a box of saltine crackers. She opened a sleeve and took a few of the crackers and set them on a napkin, then handed the napkin to you. You gave her another smile, taking a tiny bite of one of the crackers. Bucky set his mug down and crossed his arms over his chest.
âThatâs not hangover food.â
You, Pepper, and Christine all went still. Christine looked over to Bucky, blinking her eyes once.
âWhat?â
Bucky nodded towards you.
âSprite and crackers? Thatâs not hangover food.â âThose will soothe a ⌠rough tummy.â
Bucky raised an eyebrow and Christine did it right back at him.
âIâm a nurse. I know these things.â âYeah, but âŚâ âBut what, Barnes?â
Bucky looked at you, watching you take another bite of cracker, closing your eyes as you forced yourself to chew it. His eyes widened.
âOh my god.â âBuckyââ âOh my god.â
You lifted your head, meeting his blue eyes. His mouth dropped open and you shook your head, pushing back from the table and running towards the bathroom. You slammed the door behind you and Pepper sighed as she set her mug down on the counter. Bucky whirled to her, then looked to Christine, before looking back to Pepper.
âSheâs pregnant?!â âCalm down. At least we know this one isnât yours.â
Bucky held a hand over his mouth as Christine held her mug out, shaking it at him. Pepper rolled her eyes, grabbing the coffee pot and filling up Christineâs mug. Bucky sat in his chair at the table, dragging the hand down his chin.
âHoly shit.â âHowâd you figure it out?â
Bucky met Christineâs gaze.
âWhen my sister was pregnant, all she ate for breakfast for nine months was crackers and Sprite. Holy shit.â
Pepper sighed.
âI know. Weâre just as shocked.â âI didnât even think she was seeing anybody.â âSheâs not. Or wasnât.â
Bucky looked to Pepper, and Christine spoke up.
âApparently, this was a Bucky type of situation.â
He slowly shook his head and Christine nodded to him.
âYou two live together. How are you surprised by this?â âWell, we donât talk about bedroom stuff. She respects my privacy and I respect hers.â âSo what, she just sleeps through the parade of women you bring in?â
Bucky rolled his eyes.
âDonât be jealous, Palmer.â
Christine laughed, and Bucky leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest.
âIf we donât eat dinner together, I might not see her for the rest of the night. Sheâs real good about sneaking in without me ever hearing her.â âBecause you sleep like the dead.â âItâs a gift.â
Christine snorted as she took a sip of her coffee. You stepped out of the bathroom, slowly making your way back to the kitchen. You sat in your chair and let out a sigh, then lifted your eyes to Buckyâs.
âYes. The test was mine.â âYouâre having a baby?â
You nodded.
âWith who?â
Christine shook her head.
âShe wonât tell us.â âWhy not?â âBecause I want to tell him first. So donât go spreading this around, okay? You three are the only ones who know and Iâd like to keep it that way as long as I can.â
Bucky smiled.
âSo I found out before Tony and Steve?â
You nodded and he pumped his fist, whispering âyesâ under his breath. You laughed, then groaned.
âIâve got to go to work.â
Pepper made a face, walking over and running her fingers through your hair.
âCall and see if you can come in later.â âNo, I ⌠Weâve got a video call that I canât miss. Iâll have to talk to my boss and see about maybe working from home in the mornings and coming to the office in the afternoon.â
Pepper nodded, and you groaned again as you stood up from the table, picking up the Sprite bottle.
âIâm keeping this.â âFeel free. Iâll start stocking up.â âThanks, big sister.â
You waved to Bucky and Christine as you left. Christine shook her head and Bucky tapped his foot on the floor.
âSo ⌠how long ago do you think it happened?â âThe one night stand?â
Bucky nodded, and Christine yawned before she spoke.
âShe said it was a little more than a month ago.â
Bucky nodded, jumping up from his seat and tearing out the door, leaving it open behind him. Pepper narrowed her eyes.
âWas that the end of his story?â âWas that a story?â
Christine shrugged her shoulders, finishing off her coffee. She stood up and walked to the sink, and Pepper moved over so she could wash out her mug and set it in the dishwasher. Bucky came walking back in the door, chest heaving with the effort heâd just given. He held something in his hand, waving it around. Pepper shook her head.
âWhat is that?â âSo Y/N and I switch out on chores. I hate kitchen crap, sheâs not a huge fan of laundry. Weâre good enough friends that I can wash her bras and panties and sheâs cool with it.â âThatâs fascinating, Barnes. Doesnât explainââ âIâm getting there, Palmer. Easy.â
Christine rolled her eyes, holding up her hands as Bucky continues.
âSo like a month and a half ago, I go to her room to get her laundry. She usually keeps it in the hamper ready to go, but I see this on her floor, half under the bed.â
He straightened out the item heâd been holding, which turned out to be a red sweater.
A manâs red sweater.
Christine gasped.
âOh my god.â
She rushed forward, taking the sweater from Buckyâs hands. She stared at it for a moment, then lifted her head.
âI know who the father is!â
Pepperâs and Buckyâs eyes widened, each of them moving closer to Christine, who turned and walked out the door. Bucky looked to Pepper, who shook her head.
âPeople have got to finish their stories!â
You walked up the steps from the subway, squinting at the sudden burst of brightness and sunlight. You made your way down the street a few blocks, smiling when you saw Christine in her scrubs waiting outside your favorite coffee shop. She wrapped her arms around you and gave you a smacking kiss on the cheek and you laughed.
âIâm hot. Letâs go inside.â âHang on a sec.â
You raised an eyebrow and Christine sighed.
âI did something.â âOh, god.â
Christine sighed again.
âItâs not bad! Well. It might not be bad.â âChrissy, what did you do?â
She gave you a smile.
âI figured it out.â âFigured what out?â âWho your baby daddy is.â
You blinked.
âWhat?â
She nodded, opening her purse, and you leaned over it, eyes widening at the red sweater.
âBucky said he found this in your room and I mean, I knew whose it was the second I saw it, soâŚâ âDid you tell them?â âNo! No, I ran out of there like my hair was on fire.â
You gave a rough exhale, pushing a hand through your hair. Christine closed her purse and spoke again.
âIâm probably overstepping, but âŚâ
You met her eyes and she smiled.
âHe's here.â âHere? Now?â âWaiting inside.â âOh, god.â
Christine took your hand and smiled, using her other hand to tuck a piece of hair behind your ear.
âYou can do this. If you want, Iâll stay right beside you the whole time.â âChrissy, I âŚâ âYouâre going to be fine. Just ⌠lay it all out there. Just rip off the bandaid.â
You nodded.
âRip off the bandaid.â
You swallowed and Christine let go of your hand, opening the coffee shop door. You followed her inside, scanning the room until your eyes landed on a table in the middle of the store.
âChrisââ âCome on.â
She took your hand, leading you to the table where a familiar handsome man was waiting. He stood up, leaning over to kiss Christineâs cheek before turning to you.
âHi, Y/N.â
You smiled.
âHi, Scott.â
Scott Lang took his seat and motioned to the chair across from him. You sat down and he looked to Christine.
âGrab a chair and sit.â
She gave him a smile.
âThanks, but Iâm going to leave you two to talk.â
Scott gave a quiet huff of a laugh.
âLook, Iâm glad you called me and all, but ⌠what do we have to talk about?â âChrisââ
She held up a finger to you, reaching into her purse.
âI think you know, and I think youâll understand when I show you this.â
She pulled the sweater from her bag and Scottâs eyebrows furrowed.
âA red sweater?â âYour red sweater.â
Scott gave a soft laugh.
âThis is weird, but âŚâ
He unzipped the top of the jacket he was wearing, pulling it slightly open.
âThis is my red sweater.â
The smile slid from Christineâs face when she saw the red sweater Scott was wearing under his jacket. She stood there, almost in shock, before looking to you. You widened your eyes at her, pressing your lips together. She slowly nodded, putting the sweater back into her bag.
âCan I get anybody anything? Coffee? Tea? Poison? No, just me? Cool.â
She turned and walked away and Scott laughed to himself. You shook your head, then turned to him.
âIâm so sorry.â âShe always was a bit of an odd duck, isnât she?â âBut you canât help but love her.â
Scott nodded, and you sighed.
âScott, this was ⌠all a big misunderstanding. If you want to go, youâre more than welcome. Or I will, whichever.â âNo, I ⌠Iâm glad she called. Iâve been wanting to ⌠see how you were.â
You sat back in your chair and he gave you a soft smile.
âHow are you?â
You nodded.
âIâm okay. How are you?â
Scott nodded, then sighed.
âListen, Y/N, I âŚâ
He sighed again and you felt your chest tighten. You started to shake your head when he met your eyes.
âScott, Iââ âI met someone.â
Your eyebrows lifted and he smiled.
âHer name is Hope, and she ⌠sheâs amazing.â âWow.â
He nodded.
âI donât ⌠I hope you donât feel like Iâm rubbing it in your face. I justââ âNo, I donât ⌠no.â
You gave him a smile, reaching a hand across the table. He slipped his hand in yours and your smile grew.
âIâm happy that youâre happy. Thatâs all I want.â
Scott gave your hand a squeeze.
âAre you happy?â
You gave a soft smile.
âIâm working on it.â
He squeezed your hand again, then let go, sitting back in his seat.
âIt is so good to see you. Hey, since weâre here, let me buy you a cup of coffee.â âWhat about some lemonade? Itâs too hot for coffee.â
Scott gave a soft laugh.
âOne lemonade, coming right up.â
Pepper looked up from her spot on the couch, Bucky doing the same where he was sprawled in the chair beside her, as the door opened. When Christine stepped through the door, they both scrambled to their feet, and Bucky reached her first.
âSo?â âSo ⌠Iâm an idiot.â
Bucky raised an eyebrow and Christine pulled the sweater out from her purse.
âThis thing sucks.â
She tossed it onto the table by the door and Pepper made a face as she walked to it.
âDonât just throw it. Fold it.â âSorry, Mom.â
Pepper rolled her eyes as she proceeded to fold the sweater. Christine walked to the kitchen table and sat down, putting her face in her hands. Bucky sat across from her, motioning back towards the sweater with his thumb.
âSo whose is it not?â âScott.â âScott Lang? Y/Nâs ex?â
Bucky turned back to the sweater and Pepper made a face.
âShe already told me it wasnât Scottâs.â âWell, you couldâve told me that!â âSee, this is why people need to finish their stories!â
Christine huffed out a breath, crossing her arms over her chest. Bucky rapped his knuckles on the table.
âSo what did you do?â âI called Scott, asked him to meet me at the coffee shop. Then I called Y/N, got her to meet me there and told her that Iâd figured it out and got her baby daddy there, so she could spill the beans.â
Pepper and Bucky both made a face. Christine nodded.
âExactly. She tried to stop me, but I was on a roll. And now I want to crawl under this table and die. I can never show my face to Scott Lang ever again.â âWhy would you want to?â
Everyone turned back as Tony stepped into the room. He was wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt and jeans this time, the suit from earlier that morning long gone. Christine looked to Pepper, who smiled as she walked over to him.
âHow was your day?â âNice try at the distraction technique. What is going on? Youâve all been weirder than usual ever since the wedding.â
Bucky mumbled as he shook his head and Christine shrugged her shoulders. Tony smiled as he faced Pepper.
âIs this about how itâs really your sister whoâs the one thatâs pregnant?â
Three mouths dropped open as Pepper shook her head.
âHow did you know?â âIâve got eyes and ears everywhere, baby.â
Pepper raised an eyebrow and he sighed.
âProcess of elimination.â
Christine raised an eyebrow and he shrugged his shoulders, looking back to Pepper.
âYou take the trash out on Tuesday and Thursdays. We had that party here Thursday night, and you took the trash out of the bathrooms. You and Chris and Y/N slumber partied here Friday night and the test was there Saturday morning. If it wasnât you or youâŚâ
He shrugged again and Bucky nodded.
âHeâs good.â âI could have been a detective, were it not for this dashingly sharp mind andââ âThe weight of the Stark name?â
Tony pressed his lips together but nodded. Christine rolled her eyes fondly, all eyes going to the door as it opened. Steve stood there, soaked with sweat, and Christine raised an eyebrow.
âDid you get caught in a downpour or did you run here?â
Steve smiled.
âI ran. Water?â
Tony grabbed one from the refrigerator and tossed it to him. Steve twisted the cap off and raised the bottle, then downed almost half of it. He put his hands on his hips, then looked at Christine.
âI locked my keys in the apartment this morning.â
Christine made a face, making grabby hands towards Bucky, who rolled his eyes as he handed over her purse. She dug for a minute, then tossed her keys to him.
âHey, you going anywhere tonight?â âYes. To sleep. These early mornings are kicking my ass. Iâll leave the door unlocked for you.â âThanks, hot stuff.â
Steve waved a hand at her, finishing off the bottle of water. He set it on the counter, looking to Pepper. She smiled.
âIâll throw it away for you.â âYou are the best, Mrs. Stark.â
Tony made a noise and leaned to kiss Pepperâs cheek while Christine awwed and Bucky made gagging noises. Steve laughed and turned towards the door.
âHey.â
He walked to the table, picking up the folded red sweater.
âThis is my sweater.â
Pepperâs eyes widened as her mouth dropped open. She looked to Christine to see her face the same, and Bucky whipped to look at them, blue eyes huge. Steve shook his head.
âIâve been looking everywhere for this thing, for like a month.â
He waved a hand behind him, then walked out the door. Silence fell over the table, until Pepper, Christine, and Bucky all spoke in one voice.
âOh my god!â
Tony shook his head.
âWhat? âOh my godâ what? Whatâs going on?â
Christine covered her mouth with a hand as she squealed. Bucky shook his head, pushing back from the table and standing up.
âWhat? WHAT?!â
Tony shook his head and Pepper sat back in her chair.
âItâs Steveâs?â âWhatâs Steveâs? The sweater? I think he made that obvious when he took it with him.â âNot the sweater, you idiot.â
Tony narrowed his eyes at Christine, who let out a laugh.
âThe baby.â âWhat baby? Wait. Y/Nâs baby?â
Pepper and Christine and Bucky nodded and Tony blinked a few times.
âWhat?!â âExactly.â
