THENARDITE Colour: yellow, colourless, pale grey, light brown. Found in: worldwide locations. Named after Louis Jacques Thénard (1777-1857), Professor of Chemistry, University of Paris (France). Colourless, this stone was first discovered in 1926. A stone for the forgetful as it improves the memory and also clarifies thought patterns so that the brain and memory can be more efficient. This is a fine specimen of a California pseudomorph that is very rare and difficult to find. What strikes you first about the specimen is that when you pick it up, it weighs almost nothing - almost like Styrofoam.
Mirabilite is a hydrous sodium sulfate. Here, it has been replaced by thenardite, a mineral that forms from the evaporation of bodies of water (especially found in playa lakes).

Fun Facts:
Thenardite occurs in dry caves, in old mine workings as an efflorescence, and as a crusty deposit around fumaroles.
It was named after the French chemist Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1826).
It is fluorescent.
In humid conditions, thenardite gradually absorbs water and converts to the mineral mirabilite.
It is used as a source of sodium to produce soda, and also used in the glass and paper industries!
