Jim stood with his new sword held in the air. He felt this overwhelming sense of destiny weighing on him, like this was what he was always meant to do.
The snapping of branch behind him made him spin around. Some...thing had just jumped over the back fence. It was wearing black and red armor, and a sword strapped to its back. It was incredibly tall and had long horns that swept back from its head. He couldn’t make out anything about the creature’s face because of the helmet it was wearing, but it was clearing a troll of some kind.
Jim pointed his sword at the troll. The troll didn’t seem bothered by having a sword pointed at it, but did give him a critical eye up and down.
“I have the overwhelming urge to correct your form. I could easily knock Daylight aside when you hold it like that.” It spoke with a strange heavy timber, each word a half growl. Jim could only look abashedly at how he was holding his sword. Rather than attack him the troll sat down on the grass. “However that’s not what I’m here to do.”
Jim hesitated for a moment. He didn’t want to drop his guard around this strange troll. However it tapped something on its chest, and Jim recognized the Amulet of Daylight, just like the one he was currently wearing. So he sat down slowly opposite the troll.
“Hello Jim.” The troll said. “I was honestly never expecting to see you like this again. It’s… uncanny.”
“Who are you?” Jim asked. The troll tapped a finger to its chin for a moment. Then it’s helmet vanished in a puff of red light. Jim’s eyebrows raised. He had only seen the two trolls, Blinky and Aaarrrgghh but even as far as his limited experience with trolls went this one seemed different. It had blue stone skin, black horns and long black hair that was tied back in a warriors tail. There was a burn scar of some kind on its face and other small scars across its ears and face. The eyes stood out the most, they were brilliantly blue.
“I’m someone very close to you. I know your dad left when you were five. I know you spend too much time caring for your mom. I know Toby is your best friend. I know things about you that you would never tell anyone else.”
Jim thought carefully for a moment. “You’re...my dad?”
The troll threw its head back and laughed. Jim could see its massive tusks and sharp canines as it laughed and laughed. A soft dinging noise echoed around the back yard and its black armor vanished in a flash of light, it caught the falling amulet on instinct. The troll wiped a tear away from its eye as it stopped laughing to breath.
“No I’m not that rotten bastard.” It laughed. “I’m you from the future. Almost fifteen years in the future. Ha! I can’t believe you thought I was James Senior.”
Jim flushed with embarrassment before what the other had said processed. “Wait you’re me?”
He looked at the troll closely. Looked at himself closely. The black hair, some of the facial features, but the eyes were what stood out the most. The same brilliant blue eyes he had inherited from his mom. He was even wearing a similar, though much larger, blue sweater to what he himself was wearing at that moment.
“If you need further proof, I happen to know you have a crush on Claire Nuñez, and she invited you to try out for the school play and I know your first kiss was with Toby Domzalski.”
Jim whipped his head up. He and Toby were the only people who knew about that kiss. “Wait if you’re from fifteen years in the future…” Jim looked at the troll’s hands. He tried not to stare at the right hand that had only three fingers, but there on left hand, on his ring finger. Two interlocking rings were stacked neatly together. One purple and the other orange. They both glowed as if they were lit by some internal fire. He looks again at the scars crisscrossing the troll’s body and face. “What happens to me?”
“So much. Both good,” he holds up his right hand and spins the rings with his thumb. “And bad.” His three fingered hand rises to touch the burn scar on his face.
It feels like his breath is too tight, like he can’t focus. The troll in front of him, is him. That can’t be. How could he be a troll? How could this happen? What did the rings mean? Why were there two of them?
“Jim, take a deep breath. Let’s go inside. We can stress cook together.”
The two of them rose and were soon busy in the kitchen. Jim could see the resemblance clearly now. Older Jim moved with the same practiced ease he did. He knew exactly where the tools and implements he needed were. He started laughing for some reason when he caught sight of the old broken blender he had continuously complained to his mom about.
“You’re the Trollhunter now.” Older Jim said. “There’s no turning back, no changing what will happen. If my experience with Time Travel is anything to go by, you won’t even remember this conversation.”
“So you can’t tell me anything about my future? Anything about what will happen?”
“I can tell you anything you want to know. But as soon as I return to my own time, the memory will fade like a dream.”
Jim looked at himself, the himself from the future. At the strange change in his body, the scars. “Was it worth all of this?”
Older Jim paused in his cutting. He hung his head down, slow tears slipping from his eyes. Then got down on his knees so they were the same height.
“By the time you reach my age, you will have lost so much. Some of your closest friends will fall in the coming war. You will have to leave your home. You will feel pain the likes of which you have never felt before and will still haunt your dreams. You will bear such scars that no one will mistake you for anything but a warrior.”
Jim’s breathing again came fast. Older Jim wasn’t done however.
“And after everything you’ve suffered through. You will look back and say it was all worth it.” His voice cracked and broke slightly as he spoke. “You will find love in a way you never would have guessed. Claire. Toby. Others you haven’t even met yet. They will love you, and help you shoulder your burden. And you will love them in return.”
“You will save them. They will save you. And you will save the world. Again and again. Your name will already be in the history books. You will know peace. You will know the comfort of a world you have saved. And when a new threat rises you will rise higher to face it. With your husband and wife at your side you will triumph no matter what you face. And you will return to them, return to their love.”
Jim was suddenly grabbed by the older Jim and pulled into a tight hug.
“You will suffer, and hurt, and make mistakes, and lose your loved ones. And you will call it all worth it.”
