In this case, it was the egg. At least, that’s what you’d noticed first. 

Lately you’ve been trying to keep up with a daily routine. Or, a morning routine at least. It was the best time to walk Snow, since it was the coolest part of the day. Ash usually tagged along, since the two of them are pretty close. Norbert takes herself for walks these days (and turns up unscathed, so you worried slightly less about that) and Bean either takes himself, or on better days walks with you and someone else, like Frenchie. 

This particular morning, upon returning home, you notice the large white shape near the front door. Obviously it was an egg. It was simple and white, not like the more ornate dragon eggs you had cared for in the past, but it was also huge, a bit larger than both hands, so it couldn’t be something that came from a simple bird.

You were incorrect in assuming that it might be a “simple” bird.

Strutting it’s way around the corner was a chicken, but one with a pretty generous growth spurt. If house cats grew to the size of their larger, more wild counterparts, this would be the bird’s equivilant. It was a dark orange, almost red color, with sections of blackish gray feathers.

The best looked up at you, and luckily it didn’t seem hostile or anything, just passively observing that you were home now. In the glint of the morning sun, you could see a loose gray metal chain with a charm. Moving closer, the chicken made no action. Picking up the charm to investigate, still nothing. Eventually it got bored of watching you and went back to grazing the ground, the jerking pecks yanking the charm from your hands. You’d seen enough to read the back engraving, an anonymous message normally reserved to be seen online (if at all)
