Dec 4th, 2019 || currently reading . I’m almost done with The Mad Ship and I’m sad to report that I’m not enjoying it as much as Ship of Magic and I guess I’m starting to realize that Robin Hobb might not be an author for me. She goes on and on and on about the same things, over and over again and despite liking character-driven stories, I also expect some development. What I mean is that if you write a story solely focused on the characters, but they do the same things and ponder about the same issues for 400 pages, you’re not developing anything as an author. You are just going on circles and in my case, the whole middle chunk of the novel has been super tedious to get through. I have less than 20% to read and if she doesn’t wow me with the ending, I can’t see this being more than a 2 star read - which is a shame because I gave Ship of Magic 4 stars. . If you’ve seen my stories, you might know I’m participating in the Magical Winter Readathon hosted by @book_roast. I wasn’t gonna take part initially but the way she has planned everything and the idea behind the readers getting the reading prompts - a choose your own adventure method - is brilliant. So for the first chapter I got two prompts: to read my latest purchase and the oldest looking book on my shelves. For the former I went with Deeplight by Frances Hardinge and for the latter I picked Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief - I’ve been meaning to reread the whole Percy Jackson series for a while now and it’s one of the oldest books on the shelves. . What about you? Are you taking part in the readathon?
