I know they're probably not gonna do it, but I kind of headcannoned that Trespasser is still Solas, being full Fen'Harel, tricking the Inquisition into believing trash about Dalish/Elvhen pantheon. Do you think there's any scenario in which Bioware won't completely trash Dalish/Elvhen spirituality in DA4?
I mean like, they kind of already did, so... unless they do some retconning, I donāt see how that wonāt continue. :/

BTS: Iāll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage from [that fic]
Limiting this to one of the bits I wrote, letās go withĀ āYou donāt have to StayāĀ which is one of my favorites that Iāve written overall, and is a nice piece with just Des and Selene together.
Under a cut for length?
āYou donāt have to stay.ā
He mumbles it into the back of her neck, even as his arms tighten around her middle, his own conflicts coming to light as the sun drifts through their closed shutters.
Des isnāt really used to partners that he has an emotional connection with. Heās finally spent the night with Selene, who heās shared a home with for years already but never been sexually intimate with in a non-teasing sort of way. Itās new, and it should be familiar ground, because hello itās sex and thatās like his wholeĀ āthingā but heās nervous and clingy and scared in a way he hasnāt felt since he was younger than he should have been. And while maybe if he had woken up to an empty bed like he had expected, like he had assumed she would do because itās Selene and she runs thatās what she does when she gets scared, he would have felt more in control of the situation. Because he expected her to be scared and ashamed and to avoid ever bringing it up again and sure it would hurt but all he really expected was the memory, and all he hoped for was to still have a friend in the morning.
Selene lets out a soft sigh, shifting until she is facing him. She places a light āboopā on his nose in lieu of an actual response.
Desās face scrunches up, his forehead gently bumping into hers. āM'just saying. Usually youāre making breakfast for my bedmates and finding them a bus route by now. Youāre not likeā¦ā he makes a vague sort of grunting noise āYouāre not obligated to stay. If you donāt want to.ā
āWhat if I do want to?ā She mumbles back. āAre you going to kick me out of bed?ā
But then she stays, and sheās happy and sheās still there and she isnāt leaving him or avoiding him or ashamed of him and itās giddy and heās used to being happy in bed and laughing and smiling and having fun but this is morning after fun and thatās new and wonderful and unexpected, and itās the first time he really sees how differently his life feels when theyāre together.Ā
Des is used to sex, and Des is used to partners, and Des is used to Selene. But the combination is new.
Des has never been one to turn down anything new.
āNever.ā Des grins.
āGood.ā Selene grins back, twining her legs through his.
Selene is also more comfortable than she really expected to be. She had plenty of sex with Carina, but that had always been a little tense. Always felt like trying to keep up, like trying to impress her, like trying to get a good score on a test sheād never see the grade for. Thereās no pretense with Des; heās seen her at her best, and heās seen her at her absolute worst and thereās no need to pretend to be something other than exactly who she is. She doesnāt have to be the best version of herself 100% of the time around him, and itās just a relief, to be able to be a bit of a ābadā person and not feel judged for it.Ā
Itās comfortable, then. The two of them, alone in their bed with only the sound of their breaths and the cars passing by outside. Desās long fingers carefully stroke up and down Selenes back, soft and gentle over the scratch marks he left the night before. Too hurried, too concerned one of them might chicken out, might change their mind in the middle and everything would stop. And he would have stopped, of course, if she had asked him to. But she hadnāt, sheād been just as swept up in the moment as he had been; pressing each other into walls and furniture, clothing articles being torn and thrown without care, fighting until it wasnāt fighting anymore. War turned to love, old arguments washed away in moans and whispered apologies and oaths sworn into skin through gritted teeth and bites hard enough to leave a reminder in the morning light that it wasnāt just a dream.
Different, somehow, from his usual encounters.
I donāt have a lot of commentary for this bit, except to say that sometimes these two just need some rough loving and itās good that they can turn to one another for it, yāknow? Iām also a sucker for the whole arguing turning into declarations of bottled of emotions trope and thatās hard to pull off when both characters are non-confrontational and would rather just sulk in corners on opposite ends of a castle for a few thousand years than just say whatās on their minds... <___<
In a good way though. Old wounds healed by his healer; still her even when sheās trying so desperately not to be.
Again, Selene spends a lot of time and energy trying to be who she thinks the world wants her to be rather than true to herself. Des is good at seeing through her BS though, and better at seeing that if she just relaxed sheās already everything anyone could ask for. (at least in his eyes, but he is pretty love smitten in this piece so Iāll cut him a little slack about it)
āWhere do we go from here?ā He wonders aloud.
Will this become a regular part of their routine? Is he supposed to stop seeing other people? Will this change what theyāve had together for so long?
āWell,ā Selene says, rolling away from him and stretching her arms up overĀ her head. āBreakfast sounds like a good start to me. Or coffee. Or maybe clothes first, if you wanna go out to eat.ā
Des: this was fantastic, but also is this like a Thing now? I have questions.Selene: Yes but I am emotionally and mentally unprepared for that discussion pls caffeine first.
Des snorts, pulling her back to him quickly enough that she lets out an undignified squeak.
āBreakfast sounds great,ā he sighs, face nuzzling into the sensitive dip in her hip he discovered the night before, enjoying the way she melts now as surely as she had the night before. āButā¦could we stay here a little longer first?ā
Selene agrees, fingers threading through his hair in a pleasantly reassuring manner as she settles back into their bed.
Maybe, just maybe, he thinks, I wonāt screw this up too.
EVERYONE IS AN EMOTIONALLY STUNTED AND SELF-CONSCIOUS SAP AND I LOVE THEM.
Do the Evanuris have a tax system or a tribute system of sorts? Or is it that everything belongs to the Evanuris and is redistributed according to rank and utility? Or a blend of both? It sounds like your ancient elves focus more on quality than quantity when it comes to goods and services, which makes sense in an immortal land with population control! #sorry for the economics questions D:
No worries! I like answering this kind of stuff!
Though Iāve mostly answered it in bits and pieces elsewhere, most of those posts are earlier and a bit hard to dig out. So:
Basically, youāre right on the second count. Everything belongs to the evanuris, including their followers. Followers are basically given permission to use stuff, toĀ āownā stuff, but everything they own also belongs to their respective evanuris. One of the dramatic aspects of being traded to a different leader lies in that - because everything you own is actually your bossā property, if you get traded, you can only take stuff with you if they also agree to trade your stuff too.Ā
In amicable trades or if the person being traded is still favourably regarded by their evanuris (and depending on the evanuris themselves), usually this means that they do get to take at least some of their belongings with them. But in a lot of cases, being traded means you have to start over from scratch with only your reputation to go by.
(For example, in one of @scurvgirlās recent stories, Guidance gets traded from Elgarānan to Sylaise and gets to keep most of her personal effects. Given that Elgarānan is currently pissed at Sylaise over the trade, this is likely because he favours Guidance, and not because heās feeling generous towards his daughter.)
This is one of the reasons why merchants and traders are such prominent people in Elvhenan, though, because they have the certifications and permission needed in order to trade goods between the evanuris, acting as proxies for their leaders and representing their economic interests. Elvhenan operates mostly on a barter system between traders (exchanging goods for other goods, services, or information), but also has a credit system whereby individual servants of the empire can accumulate a certain amount of wealth based on commendations or other avenues of compensation, and exchange it for, yāknow, goods and services. And finally there are tokens, which are an Arlathan-only currency, and can essentially beĀ ādonatedā to the city in exchange for credit, or be collected and redeemed as some modest property rights (Ess got her tavern, for example, by accumulating enough credits to get the rights to own the shop - as Arlathan is neutral territory among the evanuris, technically none of them own the whole place, so property distribution works a little differently than it does everywhere else.)
Social classes are mostly enforced in Elvhenan by way of restricted access to certain goods or services. For example, some dyes are limited to use by high-ranking elves. If youāre a low-ranking elf you could maybe āownāĀ some things that were dyed such a colour, if they were given as gifts or payment for something, but you couldnāt wear them or use them. If you had enough credit you could maybe commission a very fancy artisan to make something for you, but theyād be limited to using materials that were within your rank. (Basically how commissioning works is you have to be able to purchase the materials for the project, or else reimburse the artisan/crafter for them - if, say, youāre a low-ranking elf who isnāt allowed to wear rubies, youāre probably also not allowed to buy them, so you wouldnāt be able to commission something with rubies in it either.)
Labour is technically free in Elvhenan, but so are necessities. You donāt really get paid for just doing your duties, but food is widely available, and housing is provided (where and what kind usually depends on your rank and leader). Some services are also just considered a given, i.e. you can get clothes befitting your rank from any similarly-ranked crafter, you can get healing from a healer, if youāre a musician you can get basic instruments from their makers, and none of it costs any currency. Luxuries, however, do require currency - if you want something niceĀ to wear or you want, like, a fancy lute that impress everyone at a recital, youāll need to shill out.
Compensation mostly comes from a system of commendations thatās organized by elves in managerial positions. The higher your rank, the more your commendations can be translated in worth. In theory, the idea is that if someone does really great at their job, a bunch of elves will say so, and theyāll basically get bonus points they can spend on nice stuff or on expanding their operations or whatnot. In practice, though, it mainly just means that all the most highly ranked elves can make or break everyone else and pass around the majority of commendations among themselves.
And also that thereās very little incentive for service providers or crafters to ever prioritize lower-ranking commissioners, because their commendations arenāt worth as much as their higher-ranking counterparts. So any time a high-ranking elf wants something, it generally shoots to the top of the to-do list, even if itās objectively not as important. The exception would come from elves who make a concerted effort notĀ to do that and to just do their jobs very well, but that usually means that, ironically, the elves who are best at their jobs can lag behind those who prioritize sucking up.
I just read that you had been getting hate over Ghilan'eth back in the day, so I just want you to know that all your writing and art is awesome and I love your creativity. I'm sorry the Internet is a cranky ogre when people like you give it nice things <3
Oh my goodness you are so sweet! Thank you so much! That really does mean a lot to me. It was unfortunate, because I was dealing with a pretty bad depressive episode at the time so I figured the best option was to just...leave Ghilanāeth alone for a bit while I dealt with how I was going to move forward.
Iām feeling a little better about her thanks to awesome people like you, and hopefully I can start posting stuff with her again soon.
Love your writing! I really liked this last Keeping Secrets chapter; I love how you're taking your time to really explore relationships with each of the characters as a non-inquisitor character!! Emma is fabulous, very well rounded and always a bundle of fun! I really liked how she suddenly realised that doh! Nobody likes Dorian--which I think is part of his storyline that a lot of fanfics ignore, is that Dorian has a harder time making friends despite all that superficial confidence and 1/2
2/2 charm! I also always love the little Curious chapters; especially this last one. Seeing Solas' perspective, I re-read Emma's POV because I remembered it being very, very different. It's funny how they're both misreading each other's intentions so much, which is extra fun and adds a new spin when I'm reading the main stuff. I also like that you've made Solas a bit of a screw-up when it comes to constantly wanting to fix things but not necessarily thinking about the other person's choice in2/3
3/3 (I LIED WITH 1/2!) the matter? Anywho, I'll stop clogging up your inbox. Just think your writing is really cool and that you should know how thought-provoking it is. :)
Thank you! The pacing is as slow as it is because I want to take my time with this sort of thing... Thereās so much to explore, and like a fool, I decided to explore it all with one story rather than doing a bunch of smaller ones like a sensible goddamn person LOL. Every day Iām glad thatās to some peopleās tastes.Ā
Iāve gotten a lot of really nice comments and compliments about Dorianās Friend Dilemma from this last chapter, and Iām really happy to see it resonate with so many people. Perhaps itās not a very explored aspect of his character? I listened to a lot of dialogue while outlining for this arc, and the one overarching theme I found in Dorianās companion dialogue... was that no one really liked all of him, lol. I thought it was really sad, and so much of it was just because he didnāt know the culture, and no one thought they needed to try and understand his, because it was justĀ āevil.ā Whether or not thatās true, itās not like he could learn everything overnight. So I thought he must be a really lonely person, emotionally exiled from home but not belonging here, either.Ā
Thanks for your kind message! Iāve been really happy to hear so much about Dorian with this last update.Ā

I just read your old post on half elves, and thought I'd toss in a couple more cents on de Chevin. When I was first reading the book, I thought that Weekes was going with a virulent self-racist character. Where I grew up, a lot of the most verbally racist people are urban indigenous folks who feel like they have to be in order to be accepted in professional urban society (which is itself a product of systemic racism). De Chevin kind of fit the profile, but... (1/2)
(2/2) then as the book progressed, it felt like the book wasn't--reflective?--enough on that point. Especially after reading your commentary, there's no real highlighting of the fact that de Chevin's racism is a tragedy of his environment but also a wicked choice that he's making to protect himself. Instead it's portrayed as "lucky him not getting found out" and "yes he's a rather tasteless man", but it lacks depth. I think your comparison to being in the closet is best, in that the narrative...
(I LIED IT'S 3/3) ... supports de Chevin being in the closet and his storyline is about getting freed to be "straight". It's like the narrative (inadvertently, because the story is about Briala The Hero) approves of his behaviour, or rather normalises it when it should be highlighted as more villainous or tragic or... something. I think I'm trying to think of "how would I keep de Chevin nasty as is while fixing it" and I don't know where to start other than nix narrative's approval of asshole.
Yeah, like, thatās the difference between Michel and Sera to me? Because while this with Sera also should have been written way better, at least I can tell that the intent was what you describe first.Ā
The tragedy in Seraās writing is that she feels how she feels about being an elf. The tragedy in Michelās writing is that he is an elf.
"That's great! Congratulations!" Ooooohhh Selene -face in hands- that's adorable but uuuugh!! -blushes on behalf of other person- I love love love reading about Selene!
my favorite part is that this is actually the self-confident, smooth, heart-throb version of Selene, and she still turns into an awkward goober around @feynites Dirthamen. Some things never change.Ā
K, so I got a notification on snapchat that said "Ali is now on Snapchat!" and I genuinely thought it said "Aili is now on Snapchat" and for a split second two things happened in my brain: 1) I thought, "oh that's nice, I should add her" and 2) I thought "I wonder when she got a phone?" This means: I thought that Aili was a real person. I thought that I knew Aili. I thought that Aili knew me, and that we were friends--and that she had a phone. Let us ponder that!
1) This is adorable, thank you for sharing and 2) this is hilarious to me because Aili is sort of notoriously bad at taking pictures with her phone. XD I donāt have a Snapchat so Iā m not completely sure what all goes on there, but I feel like any social media Aili had would just be likeā¦āHere are the 5 new books Iām reading and also I made friends with this stray cat!!!1ā³Ā
I can sort of see her running a book blog, actually. Writing reviews and getting into heated debates with Fadescholar43 about the various inaccuracies of historical texts and how Elvhen passages have been mistranslated. XDĀ
I can also sort of picture her sending a picture of a snail to Uthvir at like 6:30 in the morning with the captionĀ āeffervescentā. ^_^;Ā
But if you think that you would be friends with her, then she would almost certainly be friends with you!! <3 Sheād definitely hit the follow back button.Ā Thereās going to be a lot of blurry photos where her thumb is covering part of the lens, though. And complaining that cinnamon apple themed things only get served in the fall. What the heck is up with that anyway?? Ā
