Ironic, Lena thought, to witness death collapsed and bleeding. At first she’d sworn him dead, strewn across the rails where they’d fallen below into the subway tunnels. Tracer easily evaded an incoming rush of light illuminating near pitch black tunnels, each car thundering by and disappearing as quick as it had come.
Silence engulfed the enclosed space afterwards. Not a single bullet from his shotguns or Reaper’s unsettling laugh reappeared. A minute drifted pass, turning quickly to several. Only silence, and on guard, she had begun searching the space. If he’d been hunting her, Reaper was taking his time.
Tracer only realizes he had not dodged as she had when she trips over the body, she had not spotted him, cloaked in black in the dark. Realizing he had been hit by the oncoming train took several moments, he had always seemed as untouchable as she had been.
Cautiously, she nudges him with her foot, he does not move. She kneels, slowly, and finds the separation between his collar and the hood pulled over his head. Tracer is uncertain if he is even alive, he had always seemed to be a ghost. But phantoms do not bleed, he is as human as the rest of them. That means he surely has vitals, if the impact hadn’t killed him.
Finding his pulse is difficult when she presses two fingers against the exposed part of his throat, trying to remember exactly where Angela had once told her one was supposed to check. Eventually she finds it, weak, but a sign of life nonetheless.
Tracer stands at a crossroads, Finishing him off would be the wise thing to do, but she isn’t a killer. Neither can she leave him for the next train to come along and finish the job the first one had.
Her guns are sheathed with a heavy sigh, glancing around. There is a small maintenance room near them, it does not contain an exit, but it is a safe refuge. Already she is exhausted, it takes a reasonable effort to drag him off the tracks, breaking away the maintenance room lock and getting him inside the small space. He’ll be fine there, once he wakes. Lena doesn’t want to stick around until he does.
Tracer doesn’t get the opportunity to leave quickly, barely conscious he calls to her, those words alone freeze her in place. Just ten minutes before he had been trying to kill her, his request for her to stay makes her both cautious and suspicious, but not refusing outright.
“Temporary truce, alright?” Only once there is agreement does she return to sit against the opposite wall, observing him. Anyone else would’ve died being struck by that train, she cannot determine the extent of his injuries, but they do seem to have impacted him enough. “Just ‘til morning. I’ll stay ‘ere.”
