my kingdom for a time turner;
This was it, what they had been leading up to their entire lives. The one fight that would forever change not only their lives, but the lives of every witch and wizard in the magical world, and Rodolphus could think of nothing better than fighting it alongside his wife and brother.
After casting a particularly nasty hex in the direction of a cocky Gryffindor, Rodolphus chuckled darkly at the result and turned to look towards his wife, almost seeking that small sliver of approval she often awarded him mid spell casting. But instead of seeing Bellatrix grinning in that maniacal way of hers as she took out those redheaded abominations, his eyes caught a flicker of fear in her eye before he began to notice the flacks of ash drifting from her body.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl, the noises from the fighting around him ebbing away, the only sound left being a loud, gut wrenching cry of his wife's name that he didn't even realize was coming from his own mouth. Eyes wide and panicked, he moved to step towards her, wand raised as if to help somehow, when two arms wrapped around his middle and began hauling him backwards.
Confused and beyond distraught, Rodolphus fought his attacker not with magic, but with a hard elbow to the stomach which caused the grip to loosen and the Death Eater to break free. Sprinting towards his wife, he nearly managed to reach her before she crumbled to the ground, but before he could manage to do so, the arms were back around his waist and Rabastan's voice in his ear.
She's gone, brother. They're both gone. We have to go. He has fallen. Potter has won.
The realization that the only two people that meant anything in his life (save for his own kin) had met their end was too much for Rodolphus. Staring after the spot his wife had stood not five minutes prior, a heavy weight pressed down on his chest and he allowed his brother to pull him from the Great Hall, unable to will his body to do anything at the moment. He felt empty, moreso than he ever had in his entire life. Bellatrix was gone, as was their master, and the only way Rodolphus could imagine getting past the pain erupting inside of him was to fall on his own wand.
