Ideally? I was pretty open toward anything, but I wanted the ending to be generally happy. I didn't want the mother to die, but more than that, after I knew she died, I wanted her death to mean more than an "OK" for Ted to go back to Robin. I wanted Barney's happy ending to be with Robin, who was supposed to mean more to him than kids. I wanted Robin to travel the world doing a job she loved, but with Barney as her supportive husband by her side. I wanted Lily to get her dream, which we don't know because we weren't told anything besides she had three kids. Marshall got a nice future, and Ted got his happy ending. But after nine years of change and growth of these characters, I expected so much more. And what hurts the most is that this has been planned from the beginning, so every story we were ever fed seems irrelevant.
