In this indie comedy, James plays Oliver Lawless, a former high school jock who's sought out by an old classmate (played by Jack Black) in hopes that he'll come to their high school reunion which is dead on arrival. Black's character Dan travels to California to find Oliver after seeing him in an overnight infomercial assuming he's a top notch actor. Things escalate after the two spend a crazy night doing drugs, drinking and bar hopping. It's a movie that will definitely shock you but entertain you as well. Sitting at a measly 49% on rotten tomatoes, it’s safe to say that The D Train was not well received. A buddy comedy between Jack Black and James Marsden, it’s safe to say that I did not have high hopes for this movie. But despite all that I ended up seeing, a dark, brave and challenging dramedy that is not afraid to take some pretty big risks. It’s safe to say there is a feeling at the moment that mainstream American comedies are repetitive, boringly shot and acted. Though most allow for a mindless laugh as a vehicle for a few comedians to improve over a vague plot. While I occasionally find myself enjoying these types of films, I have also noticed a giant lack of really clever or thought provoking comedy. While The D Train is probably not a perfect answer to the desolate scope of comedy at the moment, it definitely is a good start. The D-Train is based around a hopeless loser named Dan (Jack Black) who in the attempt to impress his peers, lies about his relationship to former classmate Oliver Lawless (James Marsden) and attempts to get him at their high school reunion. In a usual Hollywood comedy what would follow would normally be the clichéd liar reveal story where Jack Black is outed as a liar and still has a happy ending and everyone learns some vague message about telling the truth. However what follows is a character study of a men dealing with modern sexuality, platonic relationships and the dangers of putting your idols on pedestals. In the end The D-train is perfect it does follow some comedy clichés, and a lot of the jokes are awkward or confusing, but I think that’s its charm, it deals with an awkward and confusing situation unlike any film I’ve seen before. It also subverts stereotypes. I honestly recommend you watch it if not to see a comedy that actually doesn’t just focus on straight relationships and how “hard” they are.
