The Danger of A Single Story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2009)

We watched a Ted Talk video today, and saw how much difference it can make to be aware of other cultures, as well as your own. This means don’t just look at the stereotypes and generalizations. Ms. Chimamanda explains it better in her video linked below.

My Professor shared this with us in class on Friday. I was so moved and inspired by this story that it got me thinking about how I too, have been guilty of having single stories about certain places and people.

I also got to thinking about how much I could relate to Adichie’s own experiences on how people view her county. I feel I can relate because I have had tons of conversations and experiences in which people only had single stories about Mexico and it’s people. It’s shame that so many individuals have these predetermined ideas of this country, which does have its problems, but then again what country doesn’t. What one hears about or reads about is only a single story it does not reflect an entire country. These single stories will never fully express the beauty, warmth and spirit of Mexico and it’s people.
