The Co Founder came through Florida on a full US tour last September and Sports Reference got to play some of the dates with them. Bellingham based three-piece The Co Founder are self-proclaimed tree dwellers, who make music that sounds well, just like you’d expect. Airy guitar lines and dreams of rainy days come to life in a mix that’s not quite folk but not your stereotypical indie band either. Guitarist and vocalist Hayden Eller, drummer and vocalist Jake Barrow, and bassist Nikko Van Wyck are headed out on two week West Coast tour starting November 1st, going everywhere from LA to Oakland to Seattle. We caught them before they become official road rats and talked through what their most looking forward to on tour, stories behind LP2, and what they’ll be listening to on the road.

Electric Daze: First off, how many tours has The Co Founder been on?
Hayden: As a full band, this is our 5th tour. Under The Co Founder name, this is my 7th. But, this is our first tour with Nikko.
Electric Daze: With all of that experience under your belt, what is the thing you’re most excited for?
Nikko: Touring.
Hayden: We’ve been talking about it for the last month, every time we’re together it’s all we talk about. It’s kind of cliche to say everything, but driving is fun, eating is fun, seeing things is fun, meeting people is fun, playing music is fun. I guess for this tour I’m most excited to be on tour with Nikko.
Nikko: I’m excited because we’ve toured enough to kind of know what we’re doing.
Electric Daze: This tour is named “The Grilled Pineapple Tour”. Why?
Hayden: Our friend Mimi does all of our artwork, and when we first started talking about shirt designs, she did one of my dog and one of a pineapple. There’s this running joke in our band of we love to barbeque, and one time Jake suggested that we should have grilled pineapple. Which is great, and I didn’t really know how to do it, so I just ended up putting pineapple on the grill. But then I put a bunch of salt on it for some reason? I don’t know why I did that. Pineapples are also just hip right now. There’s so much controversy about pineapples on pizza. It’s a poke at incorrectly trying to “get in” on something that’s hip or cool and instead looking like a dork.
Electric Daze: Have all the tours you’ve done been DIY?
Hayden: All the tours that Co Founder has been on, I booked. But everything has been through friends. When I first started playing, Nikko was one of the first people who helped me and pointed me towards others.
Nikko: I find that like DIY touring is really hard but it’s also a lot more rewarding in that sense that when you get to the show, you’ve already connected with so many people who are there. Some shows flop, and at least you’re there with bands that you’ve formed relationships with.
Electric Daze: Would you say that the DIY scene has shaped you guys as musicians and/or as people?
Nikko: I miss when I was growing up outside of Seattle, and there were three venues that were teen centers run and funded by the county government. It wasn’t DIY, but that is why I like DIY now. We’re continuing that kind of access to art. All those old places shut down within the last 10 years, and those were places like Ground Zero and these government sponsored places had bands like Portugal the. Man., Modest Mouse, and Elliott Smith, and that doesn’t exist anymore. I do DIY because that is a way to continue what I grew up with.
Hayden: I totally agree. I didn’t grow up in Seattle so I don’t know that exact scene, but I grew up listening to like Fugazi and the whole Dischord scene, and that ethic of art as a community thing. DIY seems like the only “righteous path”.
Nikko: It’s not even that, even if you’re playing at a bar and it’s not a DIY bill, the people there aren’t necessarily there for the bands. If you do book DIY and it happens to be at a bar, everyone who is in there is going to be there for the show. All ages is so important to DIY because everyone who shows up is engaged.
Hayden: I’ve played bar shows that have just sucked, and it’s because it’s not DIY.
Electric Daze: Can you describe your live show to people who have never seen you play before in three words?
Hayden: Loud, quiet, loud
Nikko: Since we’re from Bellingham, in two words it’s “subdued excitement”
Electric Daze: Co Founder is working on a new LP. Are you playing songs of it on this tour?
Hayden: We are playing 6 songs off the new record, two of which we put out on a 7-inch earlier this year. But we’ve gone back and rerecorded parts of both those songs. 2 of these songs we haven’t played ever.
Electric Daze: Can you give us a little background about LP2? What’s the story?
Hayden: Jake and I did it entirely at our house here in Bellingham. It hasn’t been like “we’re in the studio for 10 hours and we have to get this done in the time allotted”, it’s much more sitting back and piecing things together as it comes about. The last two years of my life have been really weird because I had never played a live show until two years ago, and now I’ve played over 160. It’s been a weird transition period and centered around that. They’re definitely the most personal songs I’ve ever written. One song is about when I was 16 years old I tried to hang myself in my parent’s living room and I was really lucky that it didn’t work. There’s been times when I’ve been writing and it’s kind of peeked out, but I’ve been scared to confront it head on. So this song, “Downstairs” is one I’m scared to play on tour.
Nikko: These songs are more dynamic, less folk and a lot more emphasis on bass and rhythm.
Hayden: We had some friends play on it too that has been a rad experience. Two of our friends from a band called Step Brothers sang. These are the most well thought through songs we’ve put out to this date.
Electric Daze: You’re doing a fair amount of driving on this tour and obviously you’re going to have some good music. If you could only pick six songs to listen to for their entire tour, what would they be?
Nikko: King’s Crossing by Elliott Smith, River by Akron/Family , LSD by A$AP Rocky
Hayden: Pride by Manchester Orchestra, 212 by Azaelia Banks, Is This Love by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
