The Magical Flower & Georgiana
The magical flower – symbolic of unattainable perfection and how the determination for such perfection often comes a great cost. That flower may be beautiful, but “[no sooner had she] touched the flower than the whole part suffered a blight, its leaves turning coal-black, as if by the agency of fire” (p. 636). Hawthorne uses symbolism in a way not before seen in American literature and expresses such symbols quite literally. He does not explain the flower, but clearly draws parallels between its beauty and the beauty of Georgiana. To a greater extent, the flower, that has been manipulated and “enhanced” by men, represents the beauty in the world in general.
He uses the flower to foreshadow what will happen to Georgiana if her husband continues on, trying to play God and manipulate what nature intended.
The Elixir of Life/Immortality
“the most previous poison that ever concocted” – p. 637
Georgiana’s firey, burning feeling- the symptom she had after imbibing the elixir. Symbolic of a damnation that was coming to her that would be the ultimate price for her beauty
Hawthorne, through his imagery, expresses his views on living ethically and correctly, but in a way more artistic than through a sermon such as during Puritan times.
“Or, it may be, that the stain goes as deep as life itself.”

Expanding American Literature
Instead of presenting such ideas in an essay, Hawthorne uses the short story to express his ethics. Aylmer “seeing her otherwise so perfect, he found this one defect grow more and more intolerable, with every moment of their united lives. It was the fatal flaw of humanity”- (p. 633). Hawthorne is dramatic and uses hyperbole to further express disapproval towards his main character’s egotism, emotional manipulation, and abuse of science.
