So it was a Les Mis night! Probably the last one till late april cause hopefully I’m gonna start data collecting on Monday, and since Les Mis is the longest out of all West End shows, unless I do end up working with them (which at this point is really really doubtful that I will) I won’t see it till my Adam’s Thenardier show...
My facts and perception of the show is after the cut....
Some facts before I start with my rundown
- So, by destiny (I had no idea, and we had planned this for a couple of weeks now) I FINALLY, and I mean FINALLY, got to see Jeremy Batt as Grantaire. Christian is off God Knows where so Jeremy was in! Also there was a lot, and I mean  A LOT of people missing so it was rather interesting. Both Michaels were not on, and neither was Dougie... so that made it quite different.Â
- Basically Ethan sang Christian’s track...Â
- During Master of the House... No Christian meant no Granny!sex ... and for some reason everyone (the guys) acted a lot more drunk than usual? Ethan convinced Simon not to fight the wall, which up to that point he had started to act more like he was inlove with it? ... I got say,it was probably the moment of the show when the presence of the missing boys was the most obvious... it was a little less lively and funny than usual.
-And then I died...
- I have to be honest... out of the boys, the one I always, always forget about is Michael Risley... I don’t even mean to but I just do. So I didn’t exactly notice he wasn’t on (I had found weird that Jordan was on as the payman at the factory but I just didn’t connect the two things).... No Michael meant no Parnasse.... and then he walked in...
- Ethan Fucking Bradshaw in a top hat and a suit and being badass. His Montparnasse is rather taken with Eponine, and pretty much doesn’t take his eyes from her. At the moment Javert is announce, he was up in the eventual barricade in like 2 seconds it was really impressive. So yeah, Ethan as Parnasse is a thing to be seen.
- oh... but that’s not all....
- The ABC cafe notes start playing, by that moment I had started doing mental maths to try and come up with who would be playing Feuilly and Joly, especially since the usual Joly (Dougie) was MIA.... and then it happened. The turnthing turned... and sitting there, in what it’s been named in my head ‘Joly’s chair’ it’s ETHAN FUCKING BRADSHAW...... I was mostly shocked cause I was waiting for him to be in Bahorel’s weird vest since Monte had explained to me that’s what usually happens... but apparently there weren’t enough of them that he ended up as Joly. And let me tell you... if Jeremy’s Joly is intern!Joly after a 36hrs shift... Ethan’s Joly is fucking fourth year internal medicine resident who seems like he came out of freaking Grey’s Anatomy or somthing.Â
- Jeremy’s Grantaire... He has a bun, and it’s a lot more cynic and less playful than Christian’s Grantaire. The man bun it’s important cause it raises him like 3 steps in the hotness scale (for me at least). He tends to copy a lot of the body language Christian uses, but lacking the playfulness which (for me) didn’t work that well. Those who know me for some time know that while I absolutelly love Blagden’s Grantaire my only complain is the ‘Don Lluan’ thing... It’s Don Juan... no Don Lluan... Jeremy does the Don Lluan thing. He gets into a mild fight with Combeferre? but he does join in the end as usual.
- James Gant’s Courfeyrac is such a dad... whenever someone moves the flag from the table, or wrinkles it he immediately unwrinkles it... I find it quite amusing.Â
- Here comes the heartbreak... during the first attack (which had Adam Linstead as the yeller... weird) Ethan did this thing that killed me. He started while on the Barricade, about halfway through, but after a couple of shots you suddenly see this freaking giant jumping down and making himself as small as humanly possible, clutching his ears and trembling. It was fucking Joly, having a fucking panic attack in the middle of the fucking barricade. After they ‘retreat’ while everything else happens in the center of the stage, Courf, ‘Ferre’ and I think Jehan (from afar), along with one of the girls (crouching down by him and rubbing his back), try to coax Joly out of it and back to the barricade.Â
- Gavroche did the little slaps at Javert and it was funny as usual.
- During Drink with me.... *sighs*... By the time Jeremy starts to sing, he has an arm around Ethan’s shoulders, so for the line ‘afraid to die’ he sings it to Ethan instead of to Ashely... and Ethan’s reaction was heartbreaking. Then Ashley takes the bottle from him and pushes him away, and in multiple occasions Lee (Prouvaire) and Jordan (Feuilly) try to give him some kind of comfort and he just pushes them away rather forcefully.
- As they fall asleep before BHM , Jordan!Feuilly pulls out a letter and falls asleep with it on his chest... not that mayor, and I don’t know if it’s normal but it’s the first time I notice.Â
- When Gavroche starts climbing down the other side of the barricade, Jeremy jumped really high to try and grab him before he went over? It was rather impressive.Â
- During Javert’s suicide... Thacko was a lot more deranged mad than usual, it was really really cool.Â
And here comes probably he funiest thing I have ever seen happen... during beggars at the feast, after Marius and Cosette leave, Tom and Wendy do the dropping the silver thing? When Wendy did it, the cups and stuff kinda ended up way further than usual, but when Tom dropped the silver platter... instead of clanging it landed on it’s side... and it rolled.... and it rolled.... and it rolled (imagine EVERYONE’S EYES ON THE PLATTER) right into the pit! The conductor was able to catch it before it hit anyone but everyone bursted out laughing, clapped at the conductor and when the music continued Tom actually kinda improvised a little, yelling ‘CONCENTRATE’ to everyone cause everyone was giggling and finished the song.Â
----- and at curtain call he came out with his hand behind his back... took his bow and then pulled out the same platter so everyone could laugh/clap again.
The conductor got a huge applause from everyone and the cast, and I was told at the SD that the biggest thing was that it was his last show at Les Mis.... coincidences.... huh?
So yeah, it was a great show, a little different cause lots of people missing but still as awesome as usual.... Â
