No, you’re in very good company here. Vigilante!Alex already comes with a host of problems based on her characterization (her reaction to James as Guardian is rather telling) as well as her commitment to the DEO, and erasing Kate Kane as Batwoman has its own slew of issues.

I think a lot of it comes from not knowing much about Batwoman besides a wikipedia blurb or something, but people really seem to miss that Batwoman is the complete opposite of Batman in terms of identity. Batman is an idea, and anyone can take on that mantle. Batgirl is actually similar in this regard. Batwoman, that is specifically Kate Kane’s uniform. She made it and defined it as the only way she could serve, thanks to the avenue she wanted to serve through being taken from her. Alex...can’t be in that role. I mean, she’s openly gay and serving in the military now, so, she has her call to arms.

And yes, it’d be jewish erasure, which is particularly a bug up my ass in our current cultural milieu. Especially given the phenomenal job DC is doing with Kate’s jewishness in both Bombshells and her solo rebirth. She spoke Yiddish! I just...never see that! Which is also why Snapper was bringing me to tears this week, lol.

Also, and maybe this is a stupid point, but even if Alex wants to be a vigilante (which again, why? Fuck she can break laws and throw herself into a stupidly risky mission and have no repercussions in her job anyway. Talk about security), what the fuck would the bat be to her? Why would she pick a bat as a symbol? Does that mean the universe would establish Batman? Does she visit Gotham City and get inspired? Does she become the first Batman (in which case she should call herself that or Batgirl to avoid the shittiness inherent in making her “Batwoman,” even though I can’t say any of this is making a modicum of sense)? Is she going to fall into a bat-infested well?

Because with this entire dialogue, the only thing I keep coming back to is that people think Alex should be Batwoman due to the fact that they’re both lesbians. And both dated a “Maggie Sawyer” (though that’s its own story ...thank you @progmanx for writing everything we need on this ever). And sorry, as a queer woman the idea that we’re all interchangeable or that’s somehow our defining feature is really bloody offensive.
