Bucky hated Halloween. With all the ghouls, goblins, and vampires around, he was only reminded of the fact that the only true monster around was him.

He’d killed and tortured mindlessly, and all the fake blood and gore forced upon him brought him back into the dark memories he had spent so long trying to forget.

And so when Peter had first asked him to take him trick-or-treating, he refused.

“Trust me, you don’t want me there,” he had said. It broke his heart to see the rejection on Peter’s face, and he had almost considered saying yes. But then Bucky saw a Party City advertisement with a plastic mask contorted into a scream, blood spilling over the corners of its mouth, and he was reminded of all the reasons to say no.

The second time Peter asked, he came prepared with a list of reasons.

“C’mon, it’ll be fun! We’ll get lots of candy and you already have the perfect costume with your metal arm-” 

Bucky stopped listening and cut the kid off. “No. Why don’t you go ask Stark?”

Because I wanted to go with you. Peter didn’t say that out loud, but Bucky could tell, and while watching the kid walk away, he felt nothing but regret.

“Kid, wait!”

Bucky waited for Peter at the driveway at each house, so that he could use his child-like charm without his menacing presence around to convince tired parents to give him extra candy. 

Peter came running down the drive of the last house, waving his fake metal arm at Bucky. 

“Let’s go see if we can get a bigger haul on that side of the neighborhood!”

He smiled, speeding up his pace to catch up to the kid. Maybe Halloween wasn’t so bad after all.
