Romani people have been in the Americas since 1498 as Columbus brought them in as slaves. Many of them fled to America from Europe as they were being hunted down in the 1800s. They hate and steal the culture, dress and language but their work of artisan craftsmanship, agricultural labour and metalworking was indispensable for the economy. Many anti-Roma policies came about during this time and would refer to them as people of color:
