http://ift.tt/2zx72CC - EPISODE 54: Happy Hawkeye Halloween 2017, Part 3 of 4 - The Van Meter Visitor and Other Iowa Dragons Welcome to this year's third installment of an enticing index of hawkeye musical horrors! In this aural assault, we present an unique unit of punk, experimental, electronic, progressive, psychedelic, goth, metal, and industrial rock music to give creepiess and crawlies. And to help with the creepies and crawlies, we present a little lecture on The Van Meter Visitor and Other Iowa Dragons. Art by Dean Sturtevant http://ift.tt/2kzr9gU http://ift.tt/2wGWn7u In 1903, apparently some smelly manbat creature terrorized the town of Van Meter, shooting a bright light out of its head. Bullets had no effect on it. It was said to have come out of the mines. And after it finished harassing the town, it was never seen from again. Whether it had anything to do with the strange "flying ships" with strange men that crashed 8 years earlier in Iowa is unknown. In the early 2000s, Burlington residents saw a strange flying reptile with a 15-foot wing span and snake-like body flying over its town. And supposably, the city of Grand Mound sees them regularly. And sort of related, a giant crow with a 8 foot wingspan was spotted between Marshalltown and Nevada in 2009. So some nice pleasant stories to think as you listen to the following tunes.... There he is lying on the sand Close your eyes and breathe. Around: wood, lichen, stones, cold water, sea wind Landscape between reeds with birds Your silence, the luxury, observes the beauty Everything so alive What does it smell like? What does it smell like? Smell ideas of wisdom with fire In the depth of the mind the afternoon The heart paradise, skin watercolor lemon day Muguet at night.

The MID Chicago To Close In 2019
In February 2019, popular Chicago nightclub the MID will officially be closing its doors. The unexpected announcement is the result of recent expansion in the West Loop and Fulton Market District. While the club itself was still fairly young, opening in 2010, it is one of the more well-known clubs not only in Chicago and

Jake Xerxes Fussell

Three songwriters we’ve featured plus three acts that were/are some of the biggest of their respective decades--all tonight.
Ghostface Killah, The Mid
Ghostface Killah is responsible for some of the greatest hip hop albums ever made, whether with Wu-Tang Clan or solo. To see him bring it in any capacity--even at a bro-fest venue like The Mid--is not to be missed.
Local underground rap artist DreamTek and Mick Jenkins DJ Greensllime open.
The English Beat, Metro
When we previewed The English Beat’s shows at City Winery in April, we remarked that they “have been coasting off of their excellent 80′s catalog for decades, playing multiple times a year at the same few Chicago area venues.” Since then, though, they’ve released their first new album in over 30 years, Here We Go Love. They should play a few new tracks in their set.
Chicago ska band Heavy Manners and DJ Chuck Wren open.
Radiohead, United Center
The reissue of OK Computer proved the timelessness of Radiohead’s music from both a sonic and sociopolitical perspective. Couple that with the band’s popularity even when releasing a non-masterpiece and you get two instantly sold out arena shows. Since the release of A Moon Shaped Pool in 2016, the band has started playing songs they haven’t revisited in a while, from OK Computer “deep cuts” to post-grunge opus “Creep”.
Junun, the collaboration between Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, and the Indian ensemble Rajasthan Express, opens.
Jake Xerxes Fussell & James Elkington, Hideout
We’ve covered folk singers Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington extensively, with feature interviews, album reviews, and live show reviews. In fact, we’ve seen the same lineup at the same venue as what’s on tonight for Picnics on the Porch at the Hideout. Doesn’t mean we won’t go again and again.
Health&Beauty, Hideout
Oh look, another band playing at the Hideout tonight we’ve featured! Health&Beauty, the psych band led by Brian J. Sulpizio, plays in between Chicago’s Roommate and Big Syn.
