When The Handler first decides to protect you, it’s for her own needs. She probably thinks you could be useful to her.

Over time, when things don’t go according to her plan, she still finds herself protecting you. Mostly just hiding you away, keeping you safe for when she still thought you’d be needed.

But then she was protecting you for you. She spent time with you periodically, and though she hadn’t realized what was happening, you became more than a means to an end for her.

You were becoming the one person she found herself starting to get close to. And whatever happened she didn’t want to lose you anymore. So her protection, in a way, was still selfish, but with more care behind it.

She’d watch over you as often as was possible for her and felt the need to make sure you were safe. If anyone came close to you she’d be on guard and make them regret it if they bothered or hurt you in any way.

It would take a lot before The Handler would finally admit that she needed you. She’d even deny it to herself for a very long time.

When she finally admits to herself that she needs you in her life, she’ll fight like hell on ever telling you that.

She has this thing about independence and to admit that she needs you would be weakness in her eyes.

So, she wouldn’t. She’d swear to herself that she’d get on without you, as she had before she met you, but it simply wasn’t that easy anymore.

When she asked you to meet her next, you could tell she wasn’t herself. It pained her to see you without being able to have you like she wanted.

So out it came, her long pent up confession. It looked like it physically hurt her to concede that she needed you, but when you reassured her that you needed her in your life too, she appeared relieved.
