Fate. That was the first thing that’d crossed Roger’s mind when he first met Rayleigh. How else could he have explained it? He’d set out of town with dreams of setting sail, following the comforting Voice of the sea, and ended up directly on the path to Rayleigh’s boat. And for the first thing for him to hear was that the guy lived on the sea? It felt too perfect a coincidence to be anything but fate. And there was something about the stranger that Roger could see mirrored in himself. A kind of restlessness. A potential to be more— no, a destiny to be more. At the end of the day, it wasn’t even a conscious decision. No matter how many times he was yelled at or thrown off, he’d only laugh and more stubbornly remained. Roger had always loved and wanted like a fire, bright and strong, but it was uncontrolled, he’d always end up burning others. So when it came to it, and Rayleigh somehow knew how to avoid being burned, it was all the confirmation he needed to know that'd been right to call their meeting fate. There wasn't a world where he would have accepted any other man or any other boat on that day.
