Album Review: Wings Alleluia by Thayer Sarrano
Thayer Sarrano is back with her third album, continuing her dark, ethereal style.
As you may expect from an album called āWings Alleluiaā, the lyrical content of the albumās tracks feature spiritual undertones.Ā Backup vocals were performed by The Athens Cowboy Choir, which delves further into the religious theme. āWings Alleluiaā carries the sense that this music could be heard echoing through a cathedral.Ā Sarranoās sweet, dreamy vocals provide a soft juxtaposition against the heavy guitar and synth that are featured on most of the tracks.Ā Ā
The tracks themselves range in genre.Ā āTotemā has a very americana feel, pairing the gentle twang of Sarranoās voice with guitar licks of the same style. āGrace Goes Onā opens with a chimeatron, which has a dark sound similar to that of a music box.
The albumās title track, āWings Alleluiaā, is nearly 10 minutes long, and is almost trance-like.Ā Sarranoās vocals are heavily filtered, melding with those of the cowboy choir. However, the lyrics remains clear, unlike fuzz-covered songs by other indie artists.Ā Ā
This album is really something special.Ā Sarrano masterfully blends genres to create a sound that is all her own.Ā Choral music is an important part of my life, and I appreciate how it is incorporated into this album.Ā I believe that it is under-utilized in modern music, and has the potential to create great ambiance as well as to layer complex harmonies into a song.Ā Sarrano uses this to full advantage, allowing it to mix perfectly with other unexpected musical choices. Overall, I really enjoyed this album and would rate it an 8 out of 10.

Thayer Sarrano is a singer/songwriter from Athens, Georgia and her new song āGrace Goes Onā moves along an effect-heavy guitar line that keeps you on the edge for the entire song. But what is the chiming sound in the beginning? Thayer explains:
That instrument is a Chimeatron, It was in a room at [Letās Active founder] Mitch Easterās studio, The Fidelitorium, where Drew Vandenberg (who also engineered 2012ās Lift Your Eyes to the Hills) and I made the record. Itās this little old, beautiful tiny thing. I think there are hammers inside that hit bells and it has a tube amp in it.
Her second album āWings Alleluiaā is out on March 29.
