My name is Michael Amazan and I have sickle cell anemia. I always find it hard to say those words because of what I've been through in terms of this disease. I'll admit, throughout the times of ER visits, hospital stays, and the many voices of discouragement in my head, I wanted to give up on life. I felt like I was running from the sickle cell and can't find a way out. At times I still feel this way. But through growing as an individual and meeting such great people during the mid-portion of my time in college, I learned that life is too short to just quit and the time to step up is now. As I continue my journey into nursing school, I'm not only learning how to just help or take care of people, but outside of school, I'm still learning to be better and better as a person each day. I've proved my doctors wrong. I made it through elementary and middle school; I graduated high school; I've met and made friends with such great people at my very first job as a student worker at my college; now I'm on the verge of obtaining my associate's degree in nursing, then my bachelor's degree in nursing, and probably my master's and/or doctorate. Even though the sickle cell may come back and fight me again at any moment in time, then I'll continue to fight back like like I always have. For those of you who are going through what I'm going through or going through something similar to my situation, always remember that God has a plan for you.
