There was no fanfare when Kay and Cath left their old home. There was no housewarming when they got to this one. There were things to do, registrations to file, boxes to unpack. There still are, in some lesser used parts of their new home, boxes that have begun to collect dust because they have yet to decide where the contents should go.

Kay thinks about this as he stirs and seasons their dinner. His habit of cooking for an army serves him well here, their dinner for two having become a dinner for six, more if you count the visiting pets. In their expansive yard, people and animals alike get to know each other. Cath makes the rounds, excited to be a host, offering drinks and good company. It’s comfortable and fond, and in that moment, Kay wants for nothing.

He lowers the heat on the burner and calls out the sliding glass doors into the back yard, “Stew’s ready, everyone, help yourselves!”
