Heard people talking this morning about how boring and frustrating reading literature was, and suffered an almost physical pain in my chest, on behalf of what I would hope was simply a lack of enthusiastic and engaged teaching in their earlier lives. Then I felt it. The compulsion. The immediate urge to explain what literature means and how it benefits us and why it's still important and relevant to us even if we may not "like" a certain book. Almost as if the problem would exponentiate if I didn't do something to prevent it. Almost as if I simply had to.. teach. NOBODY TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE A CURSE ATTACHED TO MY LITERARY DEGREE. NOBODY SAID THAT ONCE YOU KNOW AND LOVE LITERATURE, YOU START TO FEEL IRRESPONSIBLE NOT TEACHING ABOUT IT.
