15 things i want to say to people who wont look at drive through window workers
2. i understand that you think you’re hip because you don’t make eye contact with me when you hand me your wad of fucking crumpled as shit one-dollar bills. i acknowledge that, to you, as a service worker, i am infinitely lower on the social status chain than you.
4. i am not a some cog of a giant robot that takes your order for a fucking jr. bacon cheeseburger and a large coke and then spits out the results via my food-chute, mechanical and without feeling. i am a real life human being, and i have a fucking ton of feelings.
5. i want you to know that yes, i am judging you for buying that many chicken wraps, and that yes, if you had actually returned the smile i gave you, that judgement would have been waved in favor of an appreciation for your social skills.
6. what job do you work? is it better than mine? more high-class? do you sit at a desk, somewhere, drinking your giant fucking dr. pepper, and do important, impactful things in the world? do you have a job? do you live with your parents? are you paying me with money you scraped out of the dashboard of your shitty fucking honda civic because you spent all the rest of it on fucking weed?
7. you’re so fucking lucky that i don’t work the pick up window, because if i did, i would spit in your fucking cashew salad, you stuck up prick.
8. i understand that you think i’m required to care how your day is going, but i, in fact, am not. i am only ‘required’ to accept the meager amounts of money that you offer me with a fake, formulated smile and give you the correct amount of change without looking too much like my soul is being sucked out. the fact that i ask how you are is supplementary, is something that i do because standing in front of a screen asking me how many pieces you want in your fucking chicken nuggets kind of makes one thirst for human interaction, even with witless cretins like yourself.
11. it’s not the glasses, people say i look good in glasses.
12. i need you to understand that your perceived apathy does not make you a better person than me.
13. i need you to understand that i will take significantly longer getting your change than i did for the woman who came before you, who laughed, high-pitched and brilliant when i stuck my tongue out at her six year old daughter. i will drop more of your dimes than i did of the man who comes after you, who says nothing, but meets my eyes intently as he hands me his wrinkled ten dollar bill, and smiles, wide, and sure, when i hand him back what i owe him.
14. i work with bad people and good people and people who deserve so much more than this and the fact that you can’t take less than a second to look up at me pisses me off even more because if i, the person handling the money, am already so low to you, i can’t imagine what you think of David, the fry guy, who burns his hands till they blister on scalding hot oil but keeps on working, keeps laughing and smiling and patting me on the back because he genuinely fucking cares and the fact that you think he doesn’t deserve your time makes me fucking sick.
