THASMIN SECRET SANTA EXCHANGE 2021
Hello out there to @thasminsecretsanta and especially to @gethelpfics from your Secret Santa! Hope you enjoy. I'll cross post this to AO3 soon.
Family Lost, Family Found
"There...all better now."
Yasmin Khan smiled down at the young girl as she finished applying some antiseptic healing lotion and a bandage over her skinned knee. A tumble off a small anti-grav cart had resulted in a minor injury and a few tears, but nothing serious.
"Thank you Miss Yaz." The girl, Delima, smiled back at her before running, somewhat gingerly, up towards her family's great house.
Yaz and the Doctor had been with Delima and the rest of her family for close to three weeks at this point. A distress call had brought them to Chelaris III, a small planet in the Zolon system. The call had come from Delima's grandmother Axeril, now the de facto head of their family, Clan Woltareno.
"Ah Yaz, Chelaris III, beautiful place!" the Doctor had exclaimed when they'd first received the signal. "Haven't been there in...oh, probably a millenia or more at this point! Wonder what the Clan needs help with this time."
"So, ya know these people?" Yaz had asked.
"Oh yeah, me n' Clan Woltareno, we go back a ways. I kinda helped get 'em started."
Yaz knew when the Doctor was in the mood to tell an interesting little anecdote, so she willingly took the bait.
"How'd ya get them...started?"
"I officiated at the wedding that united the clan."
Yaz was just a bit surprised at this answer.
The Doctor adjusted a few dials on the central console and began elaborating:
"Well, they used to be two separate clans, Woltar and Reno obviously, and they'd been fightin' each other for decades over...well, nothin' really. They'd just gotten so used to it that nobody knew why it'd started in the first place.
So, I spent a little time gettin' to know 'em, got 'em to realize that their disagreements weren't worth their time, an' Bob's your uncle, the clan was united under a new extended name."
"OK, but...what about the wedding?"
"Oh yeah, that," the Doctor said with a glint in their eye. "Turns out that two of 'em, one from each clan, were completely in love with one another. Regular Romeo and Juliet they were 'cept better 'cuz the wedding just concluded with a nice reception and not any deaths.
So after all that I let 'em know to gimme a call if they ever needed anythin'."
***************************************
That had been nearly three weeks ago. As it turned out the Clan had been struggling to keep its ancestral lands out of the hands of an interstellar mining conglomerate and had called upon the Doctor for help, and naturally they had complied. All had gone pretty well, overall, apart from a hostage situation that had required some rescue work on their part.
In between all that, Yaz had gotten the chance to get to know the clan, which by now numbered in the dozens and covered four generations. Many of them still lived in the great house, a sprawling estate covering about three acres of land. Large as it was though, it always seemed a bit crowded with so many people living there. Yaz could relate; her family's Park Hill flat in Sheffield, which by all accounts was a decent enough size, still felt cramped at times, even with only four people living there.
Yet despite these conditions, she never once saw any major dissent among the family. On the contrary, the sense of familial...belonging, that was the closet word she could think of...was always right there. Mealtimes, as chaotic as they were with so many people gathered together in the dining hall, were as lively and joyous as anything holiday event she had ever attended back on Earth. The positive energy was infectious; soon Yaz found herself chatting easily with various clan members, telling them of her own family and her travels with the Doctor, while they shared tales of their family's rich and varied history.
Oddly enough, however, this same energy didn't have an effect on the Doctor. In fact, the opposite was true; at first the Doctor would speak with them whenever they all gathered for meals or otherwise, but as time went on they spoke less. When anything was said, it was usually very down-to-business talk about dealing with the mining company, no discussion of the family itself. There had even been a handful of occasions when the Doctor had claimed to be too busy dealing the nefarious mining company to attend mealtimes, instead retreating to the TARDIS or elsewhere.
Thinking on all this, Yaz was a bit startled when the Doctor suddenly came up behind her.
"We're done here. Time to go."
"Oh...uh...did the negotiations-"
"Yep, company just signed the treaty, they won't be minin' here."
"Oh good. Well, shouldn't we say goodbye?"
"Already did. Ya can if ya want, just don't take too long."
Taken aback by the Doctor's curt remark, Yaz just stared for a moment before walking towards the great house. A few minutes of handshakes, hugs, and waves later, she walked back in the direction of the TARDIS.
As soon as she stepped through the door, the Doctor threw the lever to dematerialize their ship. This was followed by several minutes of the Doctor slowly walking around the console, pressing a few buttons and adjusting a few dials, all without saying a word.
"So, where to next?" Yaz asked in an attempt to ease the tense mood.
"Nowhere for a while. I haven't slept since before all this, gonna need at least two days worth. Ya can keep yourself occupied for a bit, right?"
"Oh, um, of course, yeah."
"Good. Right then, we'll just be floatin' in the time vortex for now. See ya later."
"OK, sleep well." Yaz had easily grown accustomed to the Doctor's unusual sleeping habits...well, unusual by human standards at least.
"Hm." And with that the Doctor headed down the corridor without another word.
***************************************
Occupying herself proved more problematic for Yaz than she had anticipated. For a while she remained in the console room, taking a few readings here and there, continuing to familiarize herself with some of the ship's functions, before eventually deciding to head to the library and get caught up on some reading.
This proved futile, however, as her thoughts turned time and again to the Doctor's cold attitude towards the clan. What was it about them that had been so off-putting? The family had been nothing but courteous and welcoming to the pair of travelers during their entire visit, yet by the end the Doctor had wanted to get off their planet as quickly as possible. Curiosity (as well as a good amount of worry) getting the better of her, Yaz decided to risk the wrath of a cranky sleepy Timelord, venturing down the corridor to their shared bedroom in the hopes of a little hearts-to-heart talk with the alien.
Opening the door gently, she peered inside. The lighting in the room had been reduced by at least a third, yet she could still see easily enough to make out the form on the bed.
"Hey...baby..." she said in a voice just above a whisper, to no response.
Drawing closer, she could make out the troubled features on the other's face; brows deeply furrowed, mouth hanging slightly open, and most tellingly, moisture covering the reddened cheeks.
The Doctor had literally cried themself to sleep.
"Oh, Doctor..." Yaz said to herself in a voice no louder than a whisper, drawing nearer to her sleeping partner. It was then that she saw the picture the Doctor still held loosely in their hand.As gently as possible she pried it away to see it for herself.
To say that it was a photograph didn't do it justice. No, this picture had a unique 3-D quality to it, as well as colors that Yaz didn't think were possible. Most importantly, however, was the subject matter in the picture.
People. Lots of them. Several dozen from the looks of it, ranging in age from infancy to very elderly, many of them wearing long scarlet and orange robes.
One of them stood out to Yaz. An older man with somewhat longish white hair and an impish smile on his face. She knew she'd seen him before. When though...
Several weeks before she'd been helping the Doctor look for the schematics to a helio-static-something-or-other. They spent several minutes going through boxes full of old papers, blueprints, drawings...and photos. One of them was a photo of that same older man, this time with his arm around a young woman with short dark hair.
She'd intended to ask the Doctor about that photo, but at that moment the Doctor had announced, "Aha, found the schematics! C'mon!" then grabbed Yaz's hand to lead her back to the console room.
And now she was looking at that old man's face again, this time surrounded by so many other faces in this remarkable picture, so many smiles...
Again, very gently, Yaz set the picture on the edge of the bed near the Doctor's hand, making sure not to wake them, and crept as quietly as possible out of the bedroom.

Yaz spent a few minutes wandering aimlessly through the corridors of the TARDIS, eventually finding herself back at the entranceway to the console room. Continuing on, the approached the center console and patted it with affection.
She knew she would never have the connection the the Doctor had with the sentient craft, but she had developed a sort of rapport with it, and she believed that, it's in own way, the TARDIS was...well, fond of her.
Looking up towards the ceiling, she spoke:
"I know ya saw me lookin' at that picture. Who were they, 'specially that old man?"
The TARDIS was silent. After a few moments had passed, she went on:
"Look I know you're very protective of the Doctor, and I'm not askin' ya to spill a buncha secrets or anythin' like that, but I just wanna know, OK?"
"Look, please," she now found herself pleading to the time machine, "if it makes the Doctor that sad n' upset...well, yeah, I know they've got a right to privacy and all...but maybe I could help in some way, y'know? A burden shared is a burden halved and all that."
A few more moments passed, and Yaz believed she wasn't going to get an answer from the TARDIS. As she turned to leave, however, the ship made a faint clicking sound and an image appeared on the console monitor.
It was the photo she'd seen several weeks prior, that of the old man with the young girl. Under the man's image the TARDIS provided the caption:
Yaz looked at the pair in shocked silence. The Doctor had spoken before about something called "regeneration", and of course Yaz would always remember them saying something about having been a white-haired Scotsman...but the concept still boggled her mind.
A moment later, and the image on the monitor was replaced by the one the Doctor had been looking at in the bedroom; the one that had apparently caused so much grief.
A single word appeared below:
All those people. All that love gathered together in one place, one time. The love, joy, togetherness, occasional fights and bickering...all those things that create the very sense of family.
All those things they'd seen when staying with the clan.
All those things that reminded the Doctor of everything that had been lost. That would never come back.
Yasmin Khan felt her own heart shatter at the grief her best friend had endured for so long.
The Doctor's family...all gone... she thought as the pain overwhelmed her.
She slumped against the console as the tears overtook her.
As she cried, though, she felt the ship slowly begin to rumble beneath her feet. Faint at first, but gradually growing more powerful. An accompanying roar sounded throughout the room, also gaining in volume and intensity.
And before Yaz knew what was happening, several diodes on the console lit up, three dials swung around wildly, and the main lever came down.
The TARDIS was in control of itself, and it was taking them... somewhere.
***************************************
Hmm...fifty-three hours, twenty minutes and change. I must be gettin' old," the Doctor said to themself after waking up from their sleep. Turning over and patting the other side of the bed, they were surprised to not find Yaz there.
"Where is she?" they asked the TARDIS. A low hum from the ship informed them that Yaz was in the control room.
The Doctor then stood up from the bed, pointedly chose not to look at the family picture still lying there ("Stop dwellin' on it, nothin' you can do 'bout it") , got dressed, and went to join Yaz.
"Hey, mornin', or whatever time it is," the Doctor said as they stood in the entranceway to the control room.
"Heya," Yaz said in return, quickly trotting over to her partner to envelop them in a warm hug before planting a gentle kiss on their lips.
"Yeah, good. Did ya not sleep in there with me?"
"Nah, ya know how I toss and turn, an' I didn't want to wake ya when you're in one of your coma naps," Yaz teased.
"It's not a coma, told ya that before," the Doctor feigned indignation, then noticed a unusual look of... something...in Yaz's eyes.
"Yaz luv, I can see somethin's on your mind."
Yaz gathered her thoughts for a moment before replying.
"I...I saw that picture. You an' your family. The TARDIS told me that's who they were."
"And...well...I got all upset, an' I guess the TARDIS got upset too 'cuz she..."
"C'mon." Yaz took the Doctor by the hand. "You have a visitor."
***************************************
Yaz led the pair down a short hallway that ended at the large wooden door to the main library. Opening the door, she ushered the Doctor inside.
A short distance in front of them was a young woman of about thirty years of age in human terms, with long, curly, dark brown hair and light brown skin. She was clad in a black jumper, black leather jacket, form-hugging jeans, and a pair of Chuck Taylor high tops. She was reading a hefty tome on astral navigation when the Doctor and Yaz entered the room.
Looking up from her book, the young woman smiled at the pair, set the book aside, stood up, and began walking towards them.
Despite the centuries of time apart, the recognition between them was instant.
"Hello Grandfather," the young woman addressed the Doctor as she approached.
The Doctor was nearly speechless.
The Doctor's granddaughter closed the distance between them, enveloping them in a firm embrace.
"It's been too long...I've missed you..."
Still in shock, the Doctor slowly raised their arms around the young woman, until they found the proper purchase around Susan's body.
And then squeezed tightly as the full import of the reunion washed over her.
"Oh God Susan... I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry...I said I'd come back..."
Tears flowed thick and fast from the Doctor's eyes as they pressed against Susan's shoulder.
"And you did," the younger woman replied in a soothing, comforting voice. "You said you'd come back one day, and you did. That's all that matters."
Watching all this from a few feet away, Yaz felt tears of happiness spring from her own eyes. She had never been much of the crying sort, not even as a child...but there were always limits.
***************************************
The next several hours were spent in close, intimate conversation among the three of them. Susan filled the Doctor in on her own experiences with regeneration (she was on her seventh), her part-human family both on Earth and elsewhere in space, and her own adventures fighting off Daleks, Cybermen, and assorted other beings whenever they attempted to invade her adopted homeworld. The Doctor in return told Susan about some of their many adventures over the previous millenia, adding that they were merely "scratching the surface" in their remembrances.
(Yaz, for her part, noticed that the Doctor carefully avoided saying anything about Gallifrey; she understood that the tragic fate of their home planet was a subject her partner was not ready to broach.)
After some time though, Yaz's persistent yawning became too apparent for her to ignore any more, so she bid the others a good night and headed off to bed.
Some time later she was awakened by the sensation of the Doctor crawling into bed next to her.
"Yeah it's me. Susan was getting sleepy herself so we called it a night."
"Did ya... um...did ya tell her 'bout Gallifrey?"
The Doctor paused for a moment before replying.
"Not yet, I will though. She'll be with us for a few more days before she'll be ready to head back home. Dunno how I'm gonna tell her, but she deserves to know."
There was silence between them for some time before Yaz spoke again.
"Listen, babe...I shouldn't've gotten all nosy 'bout those old pictures. That's real personal stuff an' all, none of my business. I'm sorry."
Yaz felt the Doctor's arms envelop her from behind, pulling her into the warmest, snuggliest spoon ever.
"Don't be, luv. If you hadn't seen 'em an' gotten all upset, an' then gotten the TARDIS all upset, she might never have, y'know, taken matters into her own hands an' gone to find Susan herself."
The Doctor sighed deeply.
"Going back to see Susan again was somethin' that I always wanted to do...always meant to do...but...well...the longer I was away from her, the easier it got to make excuses for not going back. I just told m'self that she was doin' fine, she had David an' her family on Earth, what would she need her silly ol' duffer grandfather for?
An' then...well, the Time War an' all... between losing everyone I'd ever cared about on Gallifrey an' the guilt I had over what I'd done, I knew she'd be better off without me."
"She doesn't feel that way, y'know."
The Doctor leaned over to look at Yaz.
"Yeah. While you were still sleepin' we had some time to get to know each other. An' yeah, she' got wonderful family an' friends on Earth an' all that, but that doesn't mean that she didn't miss you loads."
The Doctor took in their partner's words, mulling them over carefully before replying.
"I'm thinkin'... the three of us should pay a visit to Earth. Give me 'n Susan time together, I can finally meet her family there, you can stop by to see your folks an'--oh..."
"Super cool idea luv. We'll go see some old friends of ours, me n' Susan's that is. Ian an' Barbara. You're gonna love 'em."
