“OK Thaffe so like Magnus won’t talk to us but I would love to talk to you more somewhere else about all those muscles and how many more you’ve got and--shut up Aeryn I am busy go pester your own broody boyfriend!”
Friendly Concern
It's with a sense of not-quite-foreboding that Thaffe accepts Magnus' friendly invitation for a drink - it's not that the gesture is unwelcome, mind; anything's better than the ice-cold shoulder and bitter defeat Magnus has given them all these past three years. And it's not that he's worried, necessarily. Magnus swore he'd not have a drop of liquor for himself; not after spending three years trying to drink himself into an early grave. No, it's more that the invitation came out of the blue, didn't include Jeryk or any of their other fellow aspiring engineers, and-
And Thaffe's pretty sure Magnus spotted Jeryk kissing his cheek that morning.
29 - Preparation for the Twine boys prompts!
One Word Writing Prompts Immediate sequel to this
It was a lot easier to get out of bed when there was still Light in the sky, Thaffe reflects, reluctantly hauling himself out of bed at last. It's not like him to be so slow to rise, but he takes some comfort in the certainty he won't be the only one - he'd wager everyone's getting a little extra sleep this morning. Small wonder. Almost everyone had stayed up a few extra hours last night, drinking in the night sky, unable to believe their eyes...
Jeryk, who doesn't have to rise for another few hours, promptly rolls over to steal Thaffe's warm spot, just as he does every morning, settling in with a contented sigh.
What Thaffe wouldn't give to climb right back into bed with him again.

"Are you joking?"
Jeryk, pale beneath the brim of his cap, shakes his head. "I am not getting on that thing!"
This is what comes of never sending him on errands to Mord Souq, Thaffe thinks, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Most people managed to overcome any fear of amaro in childhood, growing up alongside the gentle, amicable beasts... but not Jeryk. Evidently.
Inconveniently.

The sky overhead turns glorious shades of orange and violet, which Thaffe recognizes - through some soul-deep memory, dimly recalled - as a sunset. He pauses in his work, gazing skyward. It sets his heart to racing: sunset means night, the unfamiliar blanket of darkness which had settled over Amh Araeng only yesterday, after over a hundred years of Light. It had emerged wholecloth the night before, after the slaying of the Lightwarden, but tonight...
Tonight he'll get to watch night fall properly.
Or perhaps not, he thinks, catching sight of Jeryk dashing toward the trolley tracks as quickly as his legs will carry him. What is he up to? It wouldn't be the first time the man's worked through the late hours on some project or other... but that was when there was always ample light to be had. With night, true night, falling soon, there's no telling what trouble Jeryk might get himself into.

"Ow, ow-"
"Stop squirming." Thaffe scoots the lantern closer, the better to see the gouges on Jeryk's arms. The kitchen table's a poor choice for this, but it'll do. The Light outside might make the work easier, he supposes, but...
But going outside will mean confronting what happened a few days ago. Two days? Three? Thaffe can't be certain; he's spent much of the time sleeping. Sleeping and drinking, like many of his fellow miners: drinking away the grief, catching up on two months of little to no sleep. And for what, in the end? All they'd managed to accomplish was-
He shoves the thought aside, shakes his throbbing head. Tries to focus instead on cleaning Jeryk's wounds. He'd been dead asleep when Jeryk had stumbled in bleeding all over the place; to his credit, the man had been attempting to tend to his own injuries when his whimpering finally roused Thaffe - no easy feat, trying to clean and bandage his own arms while scarcely able to move his arms.
Still, he is happy so long as his nearest and dearest in Twine are content.
My SON,
