“what are you doing here, really?” she didn’t trust him but to be fair, she didn’t trust anyone. tilting her head, blake tried to catch his gaze in the dark, searching his features like she could pull something real out of him if she just looked hard enough. she was good at that. reading people, slipping into their heads. figuring out what made them tick. but reed… reed felt like nothing. a void. a blank slate. and it was starting to drive her insane. and still, from the moment her stepfather had introduced them, she hadn’t been able to stay away.
it had started simple enough. they needed someone with connections at the docks to move shipments in and out. he was that guy. her job was to keep an eye on him. make sure everything ran smooth, make sure no one stepped out of line. she couldn’t pinpoint when it shifted into something else. maybe that night she’d pushed him into having a drink. then another. a few too many, until they ended up tangled in her sheets.
it wasn’t the first time she’d messed around with someone tied to the crew but it was the first time she’d gone back for seconds. and thirds. now here they were, laid up in her bed in her shitty apartment, and she couldn’t sleep. her mind kept circling back to him. “you’re… almost too good to be true. what’s your story?” rolling over, she draped herself across him, chin settling against his chest as her voice dropped, softer now. quieter, like she was trying not to scare the moment off. “tell me something nobody else knows…”
